Where are the jobs???

Published

I have an Associate Degree in Nursing, currently enrolled in BSN (about 17 credits left). Graduated in December 2014 and passed my boards in March. I have sent out tons of applications all over. I tried Nursing Homes, HHC (almost all of them), Montefiore, (graduated from their school), Brookdale, Jamaica hospital, clinics, just about everywhere. Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, yonkers, even whiteplains....No Luck. Am not giving up on trying but good grief it is so difficult to get your foot in. I honestly thought Montefiore would at least give their students a shot. We are all getting rejections.... Anyway off next week and I am knocking on doors. Can't stop trying. In the meantime I just keep plugging at that BSN. Any ideas on what else to do? By the way I did get 3 interviews just did not get those jobs...went to internal candidates.

Am willing to work at any hospital or nursing home in any of the boroughs any shift.

Buffalo (tons of hospitals here) , rochester (strong memorial, highland hospital), syracuse (upstate medical) , Albany (albany medical center, albany VA), Binghamton, and all the community regional, county medical centers in between all that are hurting for nurses. If you don't mind venturing upstate for a hospital job for a while to get experience, i am almost positive you will find what you need. They tend to be much friendlier to adn nurses too. It does get really cold though...

I wish I graduated nursing school already

Specializes in Crit Care, Vent, Step-Down, Tele, Float.

Some tips that set you apart:

Be sure to list that you are enrolled in a BSN program on your resume. Put a future graduation date on there along with your GPA. Place it with your other education stuff, many recruiters won't notice that you're not done, but accept it as you having your BSN. While this may seem deceitful, it's more to get your foot in the door. Most nursing managers gladly accept nurses that are matriculated in programs already as long as you graduate within X months of hire.

Certifications are a huge plus if you can get them (I know this won't help you). On that note get your ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke Scale certifications done.

What job experience have you had previous that would boost your nursing repertoire? For example, retail = great customer service skills. Familiarity with EHRs that you may have seen in your clinical rotations is fine to put on your resume. "Familiar with Sunrise, Epic, McKesson, and other electronic health documentation".

If you are able to volunteer at any of the hospitals, it may help depending on the facility. In my experience I have only seen two nurses hired this way.

Good luck!

Andrew

I am happy and proud to say that I was offered a position at a great hospital in Upstate NY. I am currently in a BSN program and have landed in an acute care hospital. I am still speechless. Dreams come true!!!!!:roflmao: Don't give up guys. Be very willing to relocate. It is doable. I wish everyone the best of luck! At the end of the day, as long as we are searching and stay positive, we will get what we want!!

That's great news @Chutney. Congratulations!
