Hello All Florida Nurses & Travelers
I want everyone to be Upfront & Honest With this One! Where is the Absolute WORST PLACE to work as an RN, Or as a Nurse in General In any part of Florida? I want to know of any places that I should avoid, such as Backbreaking work, Low Pay, Poor Staffing, anything considered Negative or Unsuitable. Also, High Liability too. I would much rather hear it straight from the horses mouth instead of finding out the hard way! All Honest Opinions & Personal Experiences will be Greatly Appreciated! If anyone wants to know about California, just ask. Please Respond. Thanks;)
Worst place to work as a nurse in Florida?? Any and every HCA facility. HCA is horrible to their nurses. At least, that has been my experience here in the Tampa Bay area of FL. Hillsborough County. I will never ever work for HCA again, no matter how bad the recession / economy gets.
Also, hospitals and other healthcare organizations down here in the Tampa Bay area do not care at all whether or not an RN has their BSN. I have worked in a Tampa hospital, an HCA same day surgery facility, and hospice, and it never ever mattered that I have my BSN degree. In every nursing job I've had down here in FL, I have been surrounded by RNs who have a 2 year ASN from community college or LPNs. It has been rare that I work alongside another RN who has their BSN like myself. There is very little respect for nursing education down here in Florida. What a backwards state. What a waste of money my BSN degree has been. In Pennsylvania, where I had my training, a BSN is valued and respected and rewarded. Same in NJ and NY. But not in FL.
I currently live in Boston thinking about relocating to Tampa bay area. I only have a BSN. Up here in Boston a BSN is nothing much. Most all nurses have BSN's. Major Boston hospitals will no longer hire you unless you have a BSN. If you have a MSN you are more respected but the push now is to get a doctoral degree. Everywhere is different and FL is not a big academic state like where I live. However, look at it this way that you have more schooling than most and can lead you into higher level jobs. You don't have to stay in hospital nsg. if that is what you currently do.
I can speak for the hospitals in Naples. NCH is actually being sued because of some bad behavior towards nurses interested in a Union. I have worked as a nurse and been a patient, would not recommend either!! Understaffed, dirty, treat nurses like...pay is awful. I have heard better about Phy. Regional have been a patient there and would choose to go there again(hopefully never be in the bed again!!) Nurses seem happy.

By coincidence, and not near there myself, I know some nurses who work at Physician's Regional in Naples. They are excellent nurses and are not happy there. But their only other choice is NCH. All in all, the nurses I know at NCH and the nurses that work both places prefer NCH, evn though what you say is true. Very sad.
From what I hear, Celebration Hospital went through a brief time when the staffing situation was not-so-good, but since then has been good.
I personally wouldn't call the Town of Celebration "Disney Happy", but more of like Hilton Head (Beaufort, SC) without the beach and without nearly as bad traffic but in a more relaxed manner.
How is the Mayo Clinic? How are the doctors?
Deb, why did your family member go to St. Vincent's instead of Mayo Clinic for the hear problems (bypass?)?
Comparison of Baptist, Celebration, Mayo Clinic, St. Vincint's, and good Ft. Myer's PT departments?
Please state your opinions and experiences from all perspectives (staff, patient, family member of patient, and doctor).
TIA.

What floor did you work at NCH? was there as a traveler on 4NE in 2002. I thought the facility was clean and Dr.'s were respectful but the work was backbreaking. Wouldn't commit to another season there.
Any opinions on hospitals in Tampa, Bradenton, Sarasota? Considering moving in the next few years.
Sarasota Memorial is good, and Manatee Memorial in Bradenton where I did clincials was pleasant.
Stay FAR, FAR away from Blake Hospital, and Doctor's Hospital. They are a nightmare... Owned by HCA.

I recently moved to Florida, Sept. actually and what a shocker!!!! The pay does suck, cnas' have 15+ patients a piece, so you are on your own as far as patient care,,You always hear "patient care comes first" but then there is another form that needs filled out..90% charting, 10% patient care...I have really been disappointed in the hospital systems here..
