Hello All Florida Nurses & Travelers
I want everyone to be Upfront & Honest With this One! Where is the Absolute WORST PLACE to work as an RN, Or as a Nurse in General In any part of Florida? I want to know of any places that I should avoid, such as Backbreaking work, Low Pay, Poor Staffing, anything considered Negative or Unsuitable. Also, High Liability too. I would much rather hear it straight from the horses mouth instead of finding out the hard way! All Honest Opinions & Personal Experiences will be Greatly Appreciated! If anyone wants to know about California, just ask. Please Respond. Thanks;)
Hi guys! I am a foreign-trained nurse and was petitioned by Westchester General Hospital in Miami to work as an RN.. I would really appreciate to hear any positive or negative feedback from anyone of you about the facility :wink2:
I just want to know in advance what my work place would be like, and do some mental and physical preparations for it when that time comes hehehe Thank you so much.
Hope to hear from any of you soon
In Ft Myers all hospitals are owned by Lee Memorial Health System (they bought the HCA hospitals) and are nice enough to work for. I have been with them 15 years on OB and I enjoy my job. Staffing is fine most of the time and I beleive they care about us as employees. HCA was rough to work for, all they cared about was the money and we were always short staffed but we got paid well...
This is a lively thread. Unfortunately for me.
I am set to grad this year. I will be moving back to Coral Springs to work (not a first choice, but soon to be married life and family obligations are taking charge of the decision making process for now).
I was wondering if there was a decent place to work in West Broward? I guess I would like to bike to work (I did this before when I lived/worked there) and not work at a place that I completely hated.
Also, are any of these places with new grad programs?
Thanks, y'all got me shakin' in my boots!!
I read this entire thread & can't believe no one mentioned HealthSouth in Miami. They LIE every day, change schedules & teams rapidly, without warning, mid-shift. Management by intimidation. But the rehab part is great but better for outpatients. Do not work as an inpatient nurse in this facility. I heard their facilities upstate are managed better.
I do suggest Coral Springs Medical Center. Worked there, been a patient there. It is a not-for-profit which is waaayyyy better than a large corporation hospital. It all depends what you think you want exposure to. It doesn't have trauma, for instance, but you need your basic experience first.
bet0236, baptist is ranked as one of the best places to work, but not by other nurses. by aarp, by u.s. news and world report and by working woman. but not by the florida nurses association or the american nurses association. every place has its give and take, its good and bad, of course. but, to be surrounded by people that belong in the town of steppford (as in steppford wives) and turn on you and are just as manipulative and dangerous if you do not "fit in", that is something that a nurse does not have time to deal with. but, it depends on what you are looking for and what you are willig to accept. you have to make a list of what you absolutely will not do without, what you are willing to compromise, and what can go either way, before you attend an interview with any organization. also, do research. do not listen to the advertisements, the rhetoric, the hearsay or word of mouth. learn about the company, the history, the culture, beliefs, management and management style and so forth. be very sure of yourself and what you have to offer them. in this climate some may believe that you need them more than they need you. but, that is not true. you need one another. they cannot continue to flourish without a strong committed staff and you cannot succeed and build your career and your life without an organization that will support you and nurture your development.
that is key regardless of which organization you seek to become a part of. take notes. do not believe anything that "really sounds good", and weigh your options before making a decision. i hope this has been helpful. rather than the worst place to work in florida, i prefer to think of the good things about the different organizations in florida.
Worst place to work as a nurse in Florida?? Any and every HCA facility. HCA is horrible to their nurses. At least, that has been my experience here in the Tampa Bay area of FL. Hillsborough County. I will never ever work for HCA again, no matter how bad the recession / economy gets.
Also, hospitals and other healthcare organizations down here in the Tampa Bay area do not care at all whether or not an RN has their BSN. I have worked in a Tampa hospital, an HCA same day surgery facility, and hospice, and it never ever mattered that I have my BSN degree. In every nursing job I've had down here in FL, I have been surrounded by RNs who have a 2 year ASN from community college or LPNs. It has been rare that I work alongside another RN who has their BSN like myself. There is very little respect for nursing education down here in Florida. What a backwards state. What a waste of money my BSN degree has been. In Pennsylvania, where I had my training, a BSN is valued and respected and rewarded. Same in NJ and NY. But not in FL.
I must agree the Orlando regional healthcare system (includes Arnold Palmer, ORMC, SSEM, and others) is scary. I had 5 stepdown patients many times! I felt scared every time I worked! I wish they would up there standards to those in Cali! I love working in Cali!
Have to agree with you! The ORMC sytem has the lowest nursing morale I have ever seen, and safe staffing is sacrificed. Then when the unit doesn't get good surverys back ftom the patients, it get filtered down to the understaffed nurses.Sad, because this could be a really great hospital to work for, it was when I first started.
