I went to my police department and they don't give them out and then I went to the head Chicago police department and since I don't live in that county anymore they won't give it out. So I'm legit wondering where everyone else go to get their background check for nursing school?
Background check 1: Before starting the clinical program, our school arranged a day in the spring for the State BCI to have someone on campus for fingerpriting (digitial) for all students new to our program (first years, transfers, grad students, etc).
Background check 2: When I began working as a PCA/SNA (assistant) at a large teaching hospital, my background check was completed by obtaining fingerprints during the visit with HR and employee health after I'd accepted an offer. Digitally obtained finger prints, sent to state BCI.
Background check 3: During senior year, most of my classmates and I went ahead and had our fingerprinting for our background check associated with our application for licensure completed during the day BCI was at school. Again, electronic format.
Background check 4 (both for endorsing my license from one state to another): The police department where I lived only did fingerprinting two days a month (not incredibly helpful). I went into the nearest big city - they offered fingerprinting four days a week during specific hours. No big deal. I sent all the paperwork for the SBI where I was moving (authorization for release of information to the state BON, inked fingerprints, etc).
Background check 5 (also endorsing from one state to another): Largely the same as number 4, but because I lived in the middle of nowhere at the time, I just had to drive to the county courthouse/justice center but there were specific times. If I wasn't able to go during those times I would have had to go to another county etc to obtain them.
Background check 6 (also endorsing from one state to another): I had already moved to my current state, they refused to accept fingerprints I'd obtained and sent to the new state's SBI and BON when I was preparing for my move to that state. So when I arrived here and before I started work I had to find a place to get fingerprints taken. It was slightly complicated as I completed the fingerprinting process before changing my driver's license to reflect my in-state address (I went to the DMV that afternoon...guess I got the order wrong).
My recommendation, having been through the process a few times is to call an agency and explain your situation. I would get annoyed wasting time...

I thought you could get them online, but maybe I'm just crazy. My family did foster care when I was younger and, since I was old enough to babysit them, I had to be fingerprinted and have a background check done at that time. I don't remember having to get one for nursing school cause I think I just used the one I had from doing foster care.
I think I remember the nursing school offering suggestions on where to get them done, but I can't remember (it's been almost 10 years!).

I believe that there are other background checks that can be provided for you. They are the following: Background check companies that a student pays and then they do a check of the past years. This can be done online or paper copy. Another way is through fingerprinting. You can get a fingerprint done at your local police station or an agency. Another way that you can look up background checks is by doing a google search on background check for nursing students and see what comes up in your area. That is always a helpful thing to do. I wish you the best. Marcy CNA

FYI. Even if a record is expunged and sealed the board of nursing can request that the proceedings be unsealed. It's ridiculous, but it can happen, btdt.
