My mother has alzheimer's and she is constantly removing her ID necklace and her ID bracelet from the Alzheimer's association. Mom needs a microchip period. Both of my cats have microchips. Anyone know where I can get one for Mom too? Thanks:)

Hey Blackcat - long time no hear from! :)
Forgive my ignorance, but are they approved for use by the FDA for people with Alzheimer's? I've never heard of this before, but this may not mean much.
Sorry I can't directly help you, I was just curious about this.

It's a great idea, if we could just get people in the habit of scanning wandering strangers...

What about registering her with the local police department? Our police department will scan in a picture of the Alzheimer's patient along with name, age, brief medical information, address and most important, contact information - all for free.
Yes Blackcat,
That's the problem. The microchip does not work like a GPS, it has to be scanned to retrieve information. It sounds like you need a GPS sort of tracking unit for your mom instead of a microchip. Again, I don't know if anything like that exists.
Thanks all.:) I will certainly contact my local police Dept and register her. I have heard that the tracking systems cost around $10,000 plus. I have heard that once micro-chipping is OK'ed for humans that it will cost $150 to get it. I have heard that some people don't want to allow micro-chipping on humans and some say it is the sign of the beast??

Any chance you could get her to hold on to a cell phone with GPS capability? The police can track those down, at least. But I don't know how you'd get her to hold onto it. . . .
I think that's the tricky part, getting her to hold it. Placing it in a pocket wouldn't work because she'd just take it out.
You'd have to see her everyday to be sure that the phone was adequately charged. Someone also needs to be with her while it is being charged.
The cell phone would be a good stop-gap measure though if it weren't for these problems.

While it might be OK'd for human use, there are probably not any scanners in use. What about a tatoo? Just a thought.
I shouldn't laugh, because it's a good idea, but the sight of a lol in the tattoo parlor just makes me giggle.
What do the police use to track people who are on house arrest? Would something like that be managable, perhaps?

Are you worried about her wandering away from home? Or wandering when your in public. You could always try door alarms, so when she opens a door to go outside, you can catch her before she gets to far.
