Where do you buy your textbook?

Published

I am a new student and am curious about everything!

I've heard that some people buy their textbooks on the website (like Amazon, etc.) but I am also afraid of buying wrong books OR I buy them and later what If I find out the professor changes the textbook?!

Where do you buy your textbook? I just want to save $$$

abebooks.com is another great place to buy used books. make sure you check it's the correct edition, though!

I usually research campusbooks.com which lets you compare prices at a few difference places. It's not always completely up to date, though, so on my own, I check ebay, half.com, abebooks.com, and amazon.com. A few years ago, half.com had all the good deals but this year I bought my ALL books used on amazon.com. Being armed with the ISBN number and edition is great...usually there's a way to ask the seller to verify what edition they have. I've done that a few times. In all my years of textbook buying (this is my 2nd undergrad...) I have only bought the wrong version once, and it was my Mosby's Lab Reference Book a few weeks ago. DOH.

ebay, half.com or amazon. I just bought a brand new international version of a chemistry text on ebay for $53 (including shipping) vs. the $166 I would have paid at the school. The only difference is that it is softcover.

I buy as many books as I can online, but for my ANP 1 class, I actually bought the bundle from the bookstore on campus. It was actually cheaper that way than to split it up and buy the stuff online.

i read this thread last night before buying my books ..went to bigwords.com and saved $240 bucks ..thank you

i go to bigwords.com. you can type in all the isbns and it will show you the cheapest places to get your books. you will actually be buying the books from places like amazon, barnes and noble, and textbook.com, but it will do the searching for you and find the least expensive combinations. you can also specify if you want new books. i have gotten new books through this website and saved close to 40% off the price at my school's bookstore. i bought used books for the summer. at the bookstore i would have paid about $275, and i got them through this website for just over $100. they are all in good condition aside from some highlighting and light wear and tear, but who cares when you've saved $175??

I went to my local college to see what it would take to get in, get my feet wet in school again, yada, yada....I'm OLDER you see. Lo and behold, they STILL had me in the system after changing the name, upgrading to a college (used to be a junior) and nearly 30 years! SO...I spent a whole day leaping over hurdles to get just ONE class...as I have nearly ALL my core, except for ethics, statistics and maybe a math unless I can test around it.... Then came the BOOKSTORE. OMG! ONE measley book. Now, it said it was $147 on the shelf. I had an hour wait to get up the register, wondering if I could sell my dusty old blood. The guy at the register had a horrible lisp so I wasn't sure when he said, "That'll be 80 dollars," that I heard right. Of course, I was relieved....but then even as I carried the brick the mile back to my car,:paw::paw::paw::paw: huffing and puffing....I was thinking....ONE class.... $80 for ONE stupid book for a class I don't even really care about. I mean, if I've gotten to 50 without doing any jail time, can't they assume I am an ethical person? Can't I be grandmothered in? Geesh!!! But that was Monday and class starts tonight so...who had time to get better prepared. I'm soooo grateful I found THIS forum!!!:w00t: I will be so much better prepared for all my future classes!!!

Another one is medbooksnow.com. Shop early and often. ISBN is essential for getting the right book. You can save a ton of money with half.com. Most of the sites are cheaper than any school book store. Gotta save it where you can because books are so expensive.

I just found a cool site. The resources are all free. I was looking for extra study material for an algebra class. I found textbook revolution and that lead me to the math link for a online algebra textbook complete with online quizzes and tests. I think I might try to just CLEP out of algebra now by teaching myself. Textbook revolution also has books/resources on the medical field. Click on the health/sciences and medical link on their website.

I buy all my books online in the "international version" and pay about 20-30% of retail prices.

You need the book name, edition number, author. The ISBN is nice but not always required. Some good sites to compare are Ebay, Abebooks.com, Amazon, ect. If you need help you can PM me.

I've used half.com - you have to have the ISBN at the least to look it up. You can also resell your books there. Just try to find one that will be mailed from a state close to your home state so that the book arrives in time for the start of class. I paid as little as $12 for an English book.:icon_roll
