When the hospital kills people

Nurses General Nursing

I was talking to my Step Father today. His ex-wife (the one before my mom) died. She had gone to the doctor for a routine checkup, she wasn't feeling sick at all. She had a low white count when they did the labwork.

The doctor decided to put her in the hospital for a battery of tests, maybe because she was over 80. I don't know her medical history, but he told me that she was healthy and feeling fine when she went in.

In the hospital, she got sicker and sicker with each test. She ended up with pneumonia, ended up on a ventilator, and then she died.

It makes me sick, because I know what hospitals are like. Staff is rushed, housekeeping sometimes does a poor job, nurses are busy filling our pain flow sheets, fall assessment sheets, careplans, documenting in triplicate, defensive charting up the ying yang.

There is a shortage of staff and a shortage of time.

Yes, this lady sounds as if she were neutropenic. Maybe it was a side effect of a medication she was on. But, it sounds like going to the hospital killed her. :banghead:

ClaraSic, This is not an attack, but I think you are missing the point. I believe jls is pointing out many shortfalls in the hospital system and is merely highlighting the related outcomes of these shortfalls, I don't think it was personal. And although years of experience and age don't necessarily make us better nurses, as you stated, it most certainly gives us more wisdom and knowledge. Bradley is a nurse activist and has 16 years of nursing experience. Reading his posts I believe he is passionate about both. What you may have thought was an attack, was one nurse defending another nurse who is highlighting the fact that the hospital system is failing. Please think about your words before you say them.

spongebetty,

I never said it was personal. Maybe BradleyRN could have explained the situation in a better way instead of the way he did...thats harsh. I was just trying to explain that we don't just do paperwork...thats all! I didn't miss the point, I know how broken the system is...but enough of that...Im sorry if I misinterpeted myself :(

Many people die unnecessarily in hospitals. We all know it. I just don't know enough about this particular situation to come to that conclusion in this instance. It is possible, though.
