Hello everyone. I'm a bit concerned and confused about whether to wear a protective gown and mask. I come in contact with a lot of cidex, urine and other bodily fluids. I also help with prostate biopsies, cystoscopies and bladder instillation of BCG http://search.isp.netscape.com/nsisp/boomframe.jsp?query=BCG+used+for+bladder+cancer&page=1&offset=0&result_url=redir%3Fsrc%3Dwebsearch%26requestId%3Dedca6027303f1127%26clickedItemRank%3D2%26userQuery%3DBCG%2Bused%2Bfor%2Bbladder%2Bcancer%26clickedItemURN%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fhealth.yahoo.com%252Fother-other%252Fbacillus-calmette-guerin-bcg-for-bladder-cancer%252Fhealthwise--uh1438.html%26invocationType%3D-%26fromPage%3DNSISPTop%26amp%3BampTest%3D1&remove_url=http%3A%2F%2Fhealth.yahoo.com%2Fother-other%2Fbacillus-calmette-guerin-bcg-for-bladder-cancer%2Fhealthwise--uh1438.html. I mentioned to my boss that I should be wearing a gown and mask when doing procedures, mixing BCG and that the BCG should be mixed under a hood which is how I was trained. To make a long story short, here is an MD telling me particularly with the cystoscopies and BCG that I don't have anything to worry about. This goes against everything I trained. By the way I'm a Medical Assistant not a Nurse.
Do I trust my boss or go with my instinct and training and cover up?

I think that anytime you are coming into contact with bodily fluids, etc there is a chance of splashage, and if the thought of getting splashed in the face (eye, mouth, EW!) makes you shudder for even a second, screw the boss and just cover up. I don't see any harm in being careful!

I agree as well. If you are going to splashed by bodily or chemical fluids make sure you have goggles on as well.

I was just going to say that!!!!! Standard precautions.....the CDC. You know some MDs do not keep up with the current recommendations.

just do what you have to do..cover up! and if the md insist the other way, tell him to do it himself.. your health is a priority anyway.

Or they just don't want to spend the money on protective gear.
