I am not a second courser. I have friends and classmates who work as clinical instructors now. They said that it is best and easy to teach the second coursers because this group of people are more determine than the regular students ( ages between 17 to 21). They also said 2nd coursers are more serious and focus on their studies. Although they said there are some who think that they are bankers, cpa's etc knows more than the clinical instructor themselves.

In my opinion, even if some one is a cum laude she/he has no nursing license to speak of. So better keep the debates out and concentrate if he/she is good in bedside nursing.

coz sometimes those CI's doesn't really know what they're teaching. It may not be true for everyone but it happens- that "that second courser" knows more than the CI. The debate is not really about the 2nd courser's "pagiging mayabang"(arrogant), or being older, but I think it's more of because they do their "homework". Having a license is not an excuse to teach wrong information.

Well, the CIs should do their homework so as not to teach wrong information. I graduated in 1991 and back then our CIs were good in their job. In our batch there were several second coursers which included two doctors and our CIs did not encountered any problems with them.

In my above post, I said positively on 2nd coursers but if they are in for the debates on who is the best. No way. Why not use their "cum laude" titles to go to the US instead of taking up nursing? Just a thought.

Personaly, I always encourage career people who show interest to be a nurse and work in the US to go back to school.

khalokhang (crazy, embarassing to our non-filipino readers) experience:

1. comforting an 18-year old classmate (who's failing exams despite effort) that getting high marks is also a function of age (mature neurons, more myelination, higher brain capacity) and level of uhm...desperation;

2. being 'encouraged' by instructors to attend make up classes while the kids were threatened' if they won't;

3. realizing you are the only one holds up a hand when instructor asks "anyone suffering from 'back pain'?"

you're not alone....hehehe i hate being called "manang"

just wanna share my experience....

Last May 2005, my family decided to go on a 3 day vacation trip to boracay, and since it will be a long trip, we decided to take the bus, instead of bringing the car with us....( i absolutely hate long drive hehehe), actually, i was kinda excited because i can use my i.d. to get a student discount ( sori, babaw ng kaligayahan ko!!!) --- with us was my daughter's yaya who is 17 y.o. So came the time to pay, I handed my i.d. to the conductor, imagine my surprise when he said that it did not look like my yaya!!!!Grrrrr.........it hurts!!!!! hehehe ganun na ba ako katanda????

well, i politely told the conductor that it was my i.d. and i'm presently a student.... hindi pa na kuntento, i think he looked at me and my i.d. for about 5 mins......ayayay!!!!! I was so embarrased....Guess what? I never used my i.d. again for discounts!!!! so cheer up!!!! Marami tayong ganyan.

i hate this.. i was also a 2nd courser.. and i hate the fact that some nasty 2nd coursers would try their c.i.s or professors just by the mere fact that they are cum laudes... so what?... they may have been cum laudes in their previous courses but hey... this is nursing, and even if it will feel humiliating sometimes that a teacher 10 or 20 years our junior would give their lecture on us... let's face the fact that when it comes to nursing, the professors are well versed in the field than we 2nd coursers... we must by all means conform to their teachings... unless its necessary to ask a teacher for clarifications, trying to test their knowledge in nursing would be unethical... i thought they are cum laudes? they should be more mature than that...are they trying to be grade-conscious again?haha... if they think they are that smart, why enroll themselves in a nursing school when they knew that they will be taught by a younger person? better get an online degree...

but some may not always know that there's a hilarious side of going back to school....... for example.....
1.being mistaken as the professor!
2. being called "Ate" or "Kuya" (Hate this.....really!!!)
(term for : "Ate" - older sister......."Kuya" - older brother
3. being picked as the leader of your group (always!!! - even if you have some violent reaction!)
4. being nominated and elected as the "president" of your class.
5. frontliners of any discussion that was really the idea of your younger classmates....who doesn't have the nerve to ask the question themselves........
6. watching how your UP DILIMAN - CUM LAUDE classmate won a debate with your Clinical Instructor over a RATIONALE! (thus, giving the question a bonus point!)
7. watching the trembling fingers of your professor while delivering his speech over a whole class of second courser..... 6 of which graduated CUM LAUDE from a very reputable school!!!!
8. The famous line of your professor "Second courser na kayou dapat alam nyo na yan......." (You're a second courser.......you should know that!)
9. Assigning the most dreaded Clinical Instructor to your section for no other professor would take your section other than them.......
okay....... guyz........ its ur turn.....

For the cum laude's of wherever: The classroom would be more conducive to cooperative and fruitful learning if you display politeness or courtesy to everyone especially to your instructors or professors. Any disagreement will be settled privately, ie. between you and your professor. Never ever intentionally humiliate your professor in front of your younger classmates. Be mature enough that not all people you meet are as smart as you are. Your professor is the expert in the field she's teaching. She or he may incur errors but she/he deserves your utmost respect at all times.

Being addressed as "Doctor" while the real one gets totally ignored by the client/family. Happened many times to me, he-he....
