What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

One strange name was "Red Tassle". Another was "Moonbeam"

My dad has two brothers both named Armour Glen. They called one of them Jimmy and one of them Glen. He also works with a guy named Ashley, I asked if his mom was a Gone With the Wind fan. I know someone whose parents didn't want a middle name one so instead of leaving it blank they put an "X" so on his birth certificate that appears as his middle name.

Ha YES! Just recently as a matter of fact! "DaMoney"

a woman in the grocery store yesterday showed off her new baby, who was absolutely positively adorable. she pronounced his name dee-wane.

is that an alternate pronouncation or is it weird?

Got a new one this week...did a paternity test on a young girl "Toxicanna." Not sure how they were pronouncing that... Whats worse? Mom couldn't spell it for me, the lil' 8 yr old girl had to spell it for me. ???? Other fun recent ones: A'Miracle, A'mofanthony (twins)..... poor kids.

(edited for thought): You know what is even more sad to me? How many young boys I see who are "Jr's", or even "III's" and the paternity test comes back 00.00%. I mean, I see this ALOT. And there are many times the mothers don't have the child's name legally changed...poor lil' fellas.

Moon Bear and his friend for life (parents were friends) Sparkle Beam. Both male and truly, both very screwed up.

wow i think this discusssion is inappropriate an goes to show how unattached the ob/gyn practice can be its a a womans right to name her child what ever she pleases as is her right to birth the way she wants to without judgement

Just because it's a woman's right does not mean it's to a woman's benefit.

Also, just because I think some names are silly, it doesn't mean I'm judging anyone.

I really doubt anyone posting here has laughed outwardly to the parents in question. However, I'll wager that the children in question are made fun of their faces - NOT by healthcare personnel, but by peers!

Finally, I don't recall anyone chastising a woman's birth plan in this thread.

As I mentioned in the other thread about this, I also find it kind of inappropriate (as well as often ethnocentric). It feels wrong to me to be mocking parents for such a personal decision. I wish this 9-year-old thread would die, already.

i don't see anything "ethnocentric" about the thread. no one mentions race when giving the names. occasionally, hispanic is mentioned, mostly because someone is wondering if the name is historic in the hispanic community or not, other times because someone is confirming the name is traditionally hispanic. of my contributions, one was white, one was unknown and one was black. how is that singling out a race? to presume racial motivation, one has to assume the parents' ethnicity, as i've never seen ethnicity mentioned, except as noted above.

What I mean by "ethnocentric" is that names that are more typically African-American are mocked as "weird" more than other ethnicities or races.

I'm sure in various cultures, typically Anglo-Saxon names are considered strange. And that is fine, they ARE strange names to people of those cultures.

As the great Jack Handey once said, "I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people."

Go ahead and laugh at me...it's the best medicine, after all. :)
