I think you already figured it out. Some areas pay more, but cost of living is higher. In parts of California, where I live, new grads can expect $25/hr base pay not including shift diff. But median home prices are $400,000 so it doesn't go as far as you think...

I think it is a BIG mistake to choose your job based on who is paying the most. I think you should choose where you would like to live and what type of work you would like to do. Then check out the opportunities and choose the place that will help you get your career off to a good start ... a place where they will give you a good orientation and treat you well as a person. The differences in salary (after cost of living is thrown into the mix) isn't worth being miserable in a bad job.

In short ... it's better to be happy in your job than to be paid a lot for being miserable.

For what it is worth, in the Northern Virginia area, some hospitals are offering around $20/hr. But I have to agree that money is not the basis for a job. It obviously is a big part of the decision, but if the job is lousy and not where you really want to be, then the money won't really be worth it. Perhaps it would be better to figure out where you really want to go and then research the salary and cost of living in that area. Good luck.

I did come off with the wrong impression. I don't just care about the money, but rather just interested in the different amounts being offered across the country. Please keep the info coming and thanks for your responses! Arkansas

West Central Florida is relative low in pay to new grads $15-17 range, and getting better all the time. But we have nice warm winters and nice beaches. A lot more to offer besides money.

I would consider many things before I moved such as where my interests are, beach, mountains, etc.. Do you want to live near family, what type of housing is available, is it affordable, how are the schools, are there many hospitals around in case you take a job and don't like it and want options, cultural activities, educational opportunities. There is so much to consider not just the salary. You can always supplement your salary doing agency or private duty just about anywhere also. Good luck with your decision.

Here's another question.

I'll graduate in Dec. of '04. My boyfriend will probably graduate about a year after that, but he's thinking of going to med school after he graduates. Will my salary be enough for us to live on? He'll probably contribute some, but not as much as me. Info please...

Don't take this the wrong way but I worked my husband through school and when he graduated he left me. I typed his papers, did research and all and I got left without a degree. I know love is grand and all but remember how many of us have put the guy (husband) through school and this happens. (Yes, I know guys have their wives leave too). Med. school is a long haul and if he really wants it let him do it himself. Sorry if I have offended anyone but I have saved alot of women from my fate by telling them my story.

I have to agree it depends where one lives. Cali is so expensive. We may make money but it is like a JOB Just Over Broke because after you pay that outrageous mortgage you may have some money left over. It is not uncommon why so many of us have 2 jobs vs our one.

MOVE!!!! I worked in Fayetteville Ar. for the past 4yrs. I was so thrilled when my husband was transferred back to Calif. this yr. ( no we are not Wal-Mart or Tyson people) The cost of living in Arkansas is not cheap and a nursing salary is poor. As an experienced RN in Ar. I was making what new grads are starting at here. The starting salary in Northern Cal. is about 21.50/hr. My grocery bill has dropped since moving back as well as my utlities. Good luck
