Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

What's generally needed to get into nursing programs? I recently changed my major and I'm not well informed about this process yet. I know that nursing programs are competitive and that I will need to maintain a high GPA and that pre-reqs vary a little from school to school. I talked to an academic advisor last week and he gave me a list of the pre-reqs that are needed for the nursing programs in my area. I know that most nursing programs require that you take the NET exam and they also require some other things. Anyhow, I looked for some info. on-line but I wasn't very successful in finding additonal info. for the schools in my area. I only found info. for UTMB but not for UT-H, TWU, and Prairie View A&M. I only found a list of the pre-reqs for the last three but it isn't clear to me what else they require. Help anyone?

At our school, we have to have at least a 3.6 or higher, and 100 points. There is no entrance exam, but we have to have A&P 1 & 2, Pharmacology, Nutrition and 2 Psychology classes. Microbiology isnt a pre-requisite, but I intend to get it out of the way before I get into the program, cause I have heard when you get in, you dont have time for other classes. As of right now, I have my 4.0, but who knows about after Pharmacology this summer. :chair:

At least a 3.6 GPA and A's in A&P1, A&P2 and Microbiology/Pathologoy to get into BSN or ADN programs. It's very competitive in our area.

There is no GPA requirement at my school, but the pre-reqs are A&P I, Chem, English 101 and qualified to take College Algebra. Howver, admission is half based on your GPA, a quarter on your NET test, and a quarter on the number of co-reqs completed. Good luck!

CNA certificate (to add points), HIGH GPA and HIGH SCIENCE GPA that is key! I would say you have no chance out here if you have less than 3.6 in either science or overall. The closer you are to 4.0 the better because i know that for the winter class that was adimitted everyone had maximum points and some who did didn't make the cut. Our class i think the cut off was around 3.75.

To apply:

-Must place in the Eng1010 level or take Eng1010 to achieve level.

-Must place in Mth1100 (college algebra) or take Mth1080 (intermed. algebra) to achieve level.

-ACT composite score of 21 or higher.

-GPA of 2.0 and at least (I think) 12 college credits. Although you really have no hope if you're not applying with a 3.0 or higher.

We take the NET after we have been accepted. They only use it as a diagnostic tool to see where the nursing class as a whole may have trouble.

They used to require A&P1 to petition, but it's no longer a neccessity. After the three above needs are met, students are ranked according to ACT score, # of classes completed, and overall GPA in program classes only (for example, the rereq to a&p, zoology, is not factored into the GPA).

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.
