What's your favorite nursing book? (Non textbook)

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I enjoy reading books written by nurses about the profession. The stories they tell give a glimpse of what it's really like to be on the front line.

Currently, I am just taking my pre-reqs so I have a little time during the day to pick up a good non-textbook. What was your favorite nursing book of stories?

Thanks for this thread!!! I'm just about to finish one of Echo Heron's books and I've really enjoyed it! I'm eager to read more!

I too, have read all of Echo Heron's books. Wouldn't it be neat to meet her oneday?

In another thread, someone mentioned the book "Fluff my pillow, bend my straw." Has anyone ever read this book?

Not very nurse-y, but I've enjoyed "Midwives". A midwife makes a life or death decision during a delivery gone bad and is charged with murder.

I also enjoyed Critical Care: Canadian Nurses Speak for Change

by Andre Picard...

Echo Heron, if you are out there....you have a buncha nurse fans here! I too am a closet Heron book addict. Read them till they fell apart. I fell in love with her book "Intensive Care" before starting nursing school...still love it.

LOVE Echo Heron, have read her 2 non-fiction books MANY times. Can't wait for a new one....would love to meet her!:D On another note, has anyone seen the movie "Wit" with Emma Thompson? The nurse is the movie was good, really cared for her patient - as a person....

just watched that the other night, boy did i need a dose of prozac after that! I too thought the nurses character was great. Really did a good job of reflecting the differences in dr's and nurses, although it seemed they dumbed her down more than was necessary.

MograRN,

Heron does have 3 non-fiction books out.

1. Intensive Care

2. Condition Critical and

3. Tending Lives (I think this is the title)

p.s: I also saw Wit and was ready for the "quiet room" after watching those interns and residents treat her like she was a potato. Nothing too new unfortunately. The nurse could have been more of an "advocate".

Love Echo Herron, Suzzane Gordan and Midwives---great read last year. Will look at the book shelves for others and post more.

Echo Heron I guess...

Specializes in obstetrics(high risk antepartum, L/D,etc.

My heroine--Echo Heron, RN. Her books are so very good because she has lived them. Even her fiction is based on fact. You don't read them and find the "holes" in them (like the ones that occur every week on ER) Her non-fiction should be required reading for pre-reqs for nursing school. I also loved House of God. It is extremely good, as it explains all those little phrases that we all use regularly, ie: gomer --get out of my ER. It is also very funny, especially to those of us who have had the dubious priviledge of working with interns and medical students. Some times I feel kinda funny reading these books where others see them, as they often give a ration of s*** "Don't you get enough of that at work?" But then I get them hooked!HeeeHeee:) :chuckle ;)
