What's the deal with scrubs?

Hey guys do you get to choose the color of scrubs that you're wearing or does it depend on which department of hte hospital you work at?

Can I buy white scrubs if I love the color?

varies..some hospitals color-code the depts..others have no code...

I have every color you can think of, plus I make my own tops and jackets. All of my colors are very bright, neon yellow, orange, hot pink, ect. There are many that will say " I can't remember your name, but I know who you are because of your bright colors. the patients love the bright colors. They tell me that it brightens their day and they are tired of "White".

I wouldn't buy any until you have a position, just in case they require certain colors. Unless, of course, you like spending money on scrubs.

My hospital had been a free for all, but recently created a new dress code that we have a year to be compliant with. All nurses in navy blue and/or white. All non-licensed employees are.... hmmm.... I think burgundy?

They plan on doing a big public service announcements.

We can wear what ever we want...I love prints (then again I do work peds)...but when I was in school I had a prof that did her phD thesis on patients with dementia and one of her findings was that people with dementia often thought that those who wore white were angels and got scared (not sure how she found this out)....so we were forbidden to wear white.....just a thought...plus white gets so dirty. I cannot imagine wearing it.

We can also wear whatever we want, but so does everyone else. I guess it used to be color specific to the floor to designate where you worked, but not anymore.

Coming from OB where I had to wear the blue scrubs with the hospital's name stamped across my azz, this is pretty nice! I ordered 7 new pants and 12 shirts...:D

I worked at one hospital that had a "dress code" where every unit had certain colors. Mine was hunter green. Then we could also wear white. The other hospitals I worked at let us wear whatever we wanted (scrubs ofcourse).

Colors like other things are symbols. If you like art then you remember that colors can warm or cool. They can also be used to bring serenity and healing. :)

Where I work, dress code stats nurses can wear any top but *must* wear white bottoms and white shoes.

I guess people still associate white with nurses.

I don't mind white too much.. easy to bleach! lol

I know :) green heals, and white gives an impression of something sterile and clean.

It's funny that you mentioned it because I had that in my mind when I asked the question. I heard that many hospitals are trying to surround patients with green..

I read many books on colors and "color personalities", the psychology behind that, and I believe that I have a "white" personality..

I was wondering if having this type of personality I would be a good nurse, since the best nurses are "greens", but I think as long as I truly care I will be okay.

I have been lucky to find hospitals to allow us to wear any color scrubs we choose. I think thats appropriate since WE are the ones buying the scrubs! They do not pay for them. I look sick in white so I never wear all white. Some other colors don't do well with me either. I wear colors I like, fabrics that are comfortable and styles that suit me. I do look appropriate and professional. But I also look ME!

We DID have required colors, but that fell by the wayside after they hired me...

So I wear my outrageous prints -- flamingos, fish, planets...

Most of our investigators are a trifle eccentric, so I fit right in.
