What do you wish for in a break room?

Published

My hospital is revamping a breakroom for nursing staff. Actually, they are finally making one. This is one that is a central breakroom in addition to small mini breakrooms (that are actually unused pt. rooms) on individual floors. The hospital is actually asking us for our input for what we want the breakroom to include. I'm interested in what others are thinking as well...

If you could, what would you want in your breakroom??? TIA~

I am not hard to please either, but nothing work related in the breakroom. Recently we had a huge poster up from a new skin cleanser we were switching to, and as I am eating my lunch I get to look at nothing but bed sores, fungal rashes, and just broken down skin from incontinence! I won't even talk about wound care.....

How about nice pictures on the walls, good things that are happening to different staff members or on the unit, how about pictures of staff members and their families, fun gossip magazines...just a thought!

I'd love to have a shower/bathroom/locker room for employees only.

Of course, not connected to the break room. Had one like that once and it was difficult to eat while "unsociable odors" were emanating from the bathroom. :(

We had a Flexi-Seal Insertion poster in our break room untill I took it down! Really!

:uhoh3:

a window....or adequate seating.

Oh yeah-I really like bethins idea of having to scan your id to get into the break room.I am so tired of having every Tom,Dick, and Harry get in there-I have had so many ppl come in there on my break for x,y,z it gets old. I am talking non emergency situations. One person asking for directions got beligerent when I honestly didnt know.I just want to have a light like a taxi and turn my nurse light OFF-Not in Service.lol.

I just want a REAL break, without a phone ringing, without my lead nurse telling me what to do next, just a ******* break for pete's sake.

Oh I LOVE the shower idea and more than one toilet. A keycard or keypad so only staff enters....of course management would use that to see you took 30 1/2 minutes for lunch. A place to put your cup so the NM doesn't throw it out even though it's clean and has your name on it. Soft chairs, I'd go with even elevator music TV has too much potential for argument over whose "story" gets watched. A telephone, even a pay phone if your cphone won't work in the building. A fridge and maybe a drink machine. OUr hospital threw out hundreds of dollars of furniture every year just cause the decor changed or there was a minor tear. Ask if you can see the holding room for used stuff. We got a huge dinner table for staff pot luck dinners we held first Sunday.

And I am aghast that JessieRN says she can't leave the floor...is that even LEGAL?

Yes,I hate that we have a buzzer in there that goes off when any call light is going off.It doesnt even tell you where,it just buzzes.

Coffee machine with suplies and a sink

Oh let me add to my above post. The nurse breakroom I described (as I said it exist) has a locked door. It is an electronic key pad. And I forgot a kitchen type sink, microwave, toaster oven toaster, water cooler.

BUt, I'm sure they don't want us to be THAT comfortable, we may never come out.

And of coffee maker natch

We already have a TV but I would really like someplace comfortable to sit other than a conference type table. Recliners would be ideal.:yeah: Someplace I can relax and put my feet up. Right now I put my feet up on whatever chair is next to me.

A couch would be good but I'm afraid I would lay down on it and never get up! :chuckle

What I would really really like is a nice big window, more is better, with a place that can be slightly opened for fresh air. I would forgo the TV, couches, chairs, everything for some fresh air that I can get right on my unit!!!!!!!!!:heartbeat
