What will I need for my first day at work?

Published

Hey all, I'm job hunting now but can't get the first day out of my mind. Feel good about skills and passed the NCLEX-PN, curious what supplies you all think I'll need to have. My idea:

  • notebook for brain
  • stethoscope
  • medical tape
  • bandage scissors
  • multicolored pens

Excessive? Missing something?

Also curious what skills if any you all think that I should be reviewing while I job hunt to make sure I'm ready to go. Thanks for any suggestions!

Just a thought: keep a pair of clean scrubs and socks in your car. You never know what will happen...it's best to be prepared. :)

I still use my white pocket protector I got from nursing school. In it I keep a sharpie, 2 black pens (we aren't allowed to use blue ink), 4 highlighters (pink, yellow, orange, blue), a red pen (I use this to mark anything that happens on my shift on my report paper), bandage scissors, and important cheat sheets I got in school (I fold them up and stick them in the back pocket).

As for procedures or skills to review if working in a nursing home: inserting catheters or strait cath, suctioning and trach care, feeding tubes, IM, sub-q, and intradermal injections are just some of the things you will run across. It is nice to review these but you will learn a lot at your job.

I still ask for someone to come with me if I am doing a procedure that I've never done or haven't done since clinical. Most nurses are very kind about helping.

Don't bring your own tape. It's the facility's responsibility to provide supplies!

For my first day of work I am taking my medication book and pdq for reference besides my own stethescope pens highlighters, etc.
