What will happen if you miss a college class?

My mother scheduled my doctor appointment on Aug 26th which will be my second day of one of my lecture college classes (Anthropology).

So now I am freaking out because I can't miss school and get bad grades, I have a lot riding on me to get good grades and apply to this nursing program in December. But now I don't know what to do because what if I miss something really important and it would be on a test? I can't get bad grades already.

So I'm planning on reading the chapter twice, and then take notes and outline the whole chapter so I won't fall behind my other classmates.

I have Orgo that same day but I definitely will be making that class because there will never be a option to miss that class, I don't care if I have to walk in a snow storm to get there.

Sorry guys for my minin rant. I just don't know how to handle the situation because this will be my first year at college and no one understands that I can't miss a class or two like I did in HS.

Why can't you just reschedule the appointment?

Because my mother is the devil and if it's not her way she won't comply.

Well then I take it you don't have a car or take public transportation.

Since it's your second day, you might not miss too much. I would approach your professor & tell them you will be absent from class. Ask what you will be missing & if there is any work you can do during the day you will be gone. I don't know if you're at a big university or small community college. But professors like to see when you put effort in.

Does your instructor take attendance? Even if he or she does take attendance, it's not the end of the world to miss a class. People do it all the time. It's polite to let the instructor know, if it's a small class, and you'd be missed.

Are you going to miss work that can only be done in class? Is it something you can make up later?

Doctor appointments can take awhile to get, so if it's important to you to go to the appointment, go to it.

You seem very, very stressed. I hope you can find a way to deal with all you're feeling, since college can be difficult!

Best wishes to you...

You're fine! Honestly, people miss more classes than that and do fine in school. Tell your professor, you may miss attendance points but you should be able to get assignments ahead of time and prepare yourself for the material you may miss.

I vote you put your adult pants on today and tell your mother you are rescheduling your doctors appointment so you can attend class. Unless you are a high school student who is dually enrolled in college, your mother has no business scheduling you life for you. Why is she even scheduling your check ups for you? You are capable of doing that yourself, and unless you have an illness that requires frequent dr visits, I don't see why moving the appointment to another day is a big deal.

You say your mother is the devil and wants things her way. That is because YOU let her have her way. You don't have to be disrespectful but you do have to make sure she sees you as an adult if you ever expect to be treated as such. Explain to her that your class is important and you will go see your PCP on a non class day and then leave it at that. If she argues, just tell her nicely that you are capable of making this decision and that your education is important to you. Period. Done. End of story.

I guess you've never had a mother who is the devil, lol.

I have and I can relate to what the OP is talking about. If she is living in her parents home it IS Mom's way or no way.

the appointment and go to class.

I'd say I made it to 50% of my classes in undergrad.

But you're seriously worried about missing a day of anthropology? Unless it's one of the five week summer courses or a 3 week summer course you should be fine.

From my experience, our first couple classes for my courses were the orientation/introduction phase. So it wasn't uncommon for half of the people to not show up. Missing one class isn't that big of deal, IMO.

It depends on your allowable number for missed days, as it can effect your financial aide. I would check into that, but usually missing one day will not effect anything.
