What will you do after floor nursing?

Published

I have been doing some self reflecting and I cannot see myself doing stressful floor nursing 20 years from now. I work with several nurses over 55 who often talk about the lengthy shifts, aching knees and backs, and the toll it takes changing patients and doing dressings. Most only have an associates (as do I) and cannot take the paycut of school nursing (I certainly cannot, I tried school nursing). I thought about certifications such as med/surg or oncology. I am working on tele training and will take ACLS soon.

I am in my 30s now and I am thinking about where do I want to be after this phase of my career is over. What can I do now to get there. Student loans are expensive and a BSN does not guarantee office work.

For those with an LPN or ADN degree, where do you see yourself years from now and what are you doing to get there? Those with a BSN where do you hope to see yourself in a few years?

I want to work in an ED as soon as I get my degree. I'm teching in one now and love it, but really, I'm definitely seeing that I DON'T want to work in hospitals. I plan on getting my BSN while working with my ASN and then going to school to be a women's health NP.

I think eventually I would like to become a case manger and/or a diabetes educator in a hospital setting. I have my asn and plan on obtaining my BSN as soon as I decide the route! I have worked in LTC for 8 years and now am going to work on med surge unit for the experience ,alot of jobs require acute care experience!

I agree that nursing takes a toll on us. I have been in ED for a while and at 48 twelve hours seems long on some days. I plan to stay as long as I can. I always enjoyed those nurses who still kept doing it in their 50's and even 60's. They taught me a lot and I hope to be one of them. I won't be wearing a nursing cap like Mary Jo or Suzie L did though. (I'm a male nurse) LOL. They seemed to know everything. You have to take care of yourself. I don't lift alone anymore and I raise the bed for IV starts, etc. I do hope for 8 hour shifts later on. Hope my bills are paid off by then. I don't think I will be able to leave the ED. I find nurses always say they are retiring and then you find out they are working again somewhere. My mother-in-law retires regularly.

I had all kinds of ideas for what I was going to do "after" floor nursing... but for now I'm having trouble even getting into floor nursing to start with. So all those grand plans will have to wait... :(

There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few... Who possess, the predisposition... I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death. ( I always wanted to say that lol)

Never thought of floor nursing for 20 yrs i guess after climbing the ranks on the floor up to a LPN i had enough of the floor. My real passion is Holistic's. So i have been taking college courses on how to be a Herbalist. Not only am i a LPN (looks both ways and whispers) I'm also a Hypnotherapist, a Massage Therapist, and i have Certificates in Reiki, and Tantra, Quantum Healing, and I'm learning acupuncture i already have acupressure down. I think i seen a thread like this before and told the person to think of Holistic's as a step. These are my thoughts use them as you wish. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.
