What do you wear to work?

Published

Hello to all of the school nurses out there. I recently accepted a position as a school nurse in a small school. I am a new grad but I did do sleep-away camp nursing this summer which was a great crash course. I am going to have plenty of questions I am sure and I have already read through many threads.

I am wondering what you wear to work as the school nurse? They told me that regular clothing is fine, which is great, but I don't have a lot of business casual, so I would need to buy a lot of clothing. I kind of want to wear scrubs but I am embarrassed to ask. So - what do you wear?

THANKS!

I wear scrubs but it's what is expected at my school. On school spirit days I can wear jeans and a school t-shirt.

I am actually thankful that I get to wear my scrubs. I love the ease of it and I LOVE my pockets. It's just what I'm used to "nursing" in. I'd say run it by your administration. It could be that the nurse before you preferred business casual so they think you might as well. There are a lot of different views on this, all with very valid points. I believe I remember seeing a thread on this on this board before. You might can do a search and find it.

Congratulations on the job.

I wear colorful scrubs now(I'm in an elementary school) but when i was in middle school I wore nice slacks, blouse and white lab coat.

I work in an elementary school, so I wear colorful scrubs. I feel like the fact that they are scrubs helps identify me as a nurse, and the fact that they are colorful lessens the fear factor.

I specifically asked my principal if he had a preference because I am used to wearing both but I know of a local district that doesn't allow their nurses to wear scrubs. My boss doesn't mind so I just wear whatever I feel like that day, sometimes scrubs but sometimes business casual just like the teachers & office staff. Unless it's a spirit day then I participate in that.

Thanks everyone. I will ask my principal to see what she thinks.

My first year I wore business casual. The next 2 years I wore scrubs. This year I am planning on a mix of both...like someone else said...whatever I feel like for the day. I am hoping to get some polo type shirts embroidered with my name, "School Nurse" and a cute logo to wear with docker-type khaki pants.

It depends. If its elementary I would wear colorful scrubs. If its middle or high I would probably do buisness/casual with lab coat.

I have never worn scrubs outside the ICU or OR.

I was in 3 airports this week - all the cleaning people wore scrubs.

I do not see students in my school nurse job right now, but when I did I wore business casual.

Thanks everyone. I decided to ask and was told that scrubs were fine. So, I ordered my first ever non nursing school scrubs - I am excited!
