I have worked with just about all populations. They all have their good points. The hoplessness of the schizophrenic and MR patients wares on me. I loved working with women who had survived severe abuse in childhood. Even though they were usually borderline and self destructive, their problems were all in the learned behavior range. Anything that has been learned can be unlearned. They are a hard population to deal with but they have potential for complete recovery.
I'm VERY new and rather green when it comes to psych nursing, but at this stage in the game I would have to say... the severely depressed/suicidal patient. Even though they can be a lot of work and very time consuming, they can really be helped and made to feel better... again, with a lot of work and perhaps a lot of experimenting with meds... and a lot of talking.
Again, I'm green =), and I do know, EVEN from personal experience, that there are some patients with severe depression who perhaps CAN'T be helped. I have aquaintances who *stay* suicidal about 70-80 percent of the time in spite of friends who try to help, meds, etc....
Some other types of patients have such chronic, debilitating problems, and you know that their chances of getting better aren't all that great, and that's hard.
After 11 years in both inpatient and outpatient psych settings, I'd have to agree with Morgan and Tx and say I prefer the bipolar and schiz adult patients the most. The CD patients can be tough if you don't have alot of patience or have family baggage of your own (my Dad is alcoholic). Anxiety patients are cool, as you see them start to get better control as a result of tx and what a huge positive change that has on their lives. I'm with Gooey on the night time shifts though, always been on that nighttime vibe!:)
I'm right there with ya. I'm going to be working 11-7.
One thing I'm already finding out about psych... it's SO MUCH paperwork. I hope that I can get my paperwork done in a timely fashion every night and then have time for other things, like chatting with the patients that can't sleep. :)

I am interested in Psych. For those of you who work in this field, what is your favorite group of patients to work with?
Thanks
