I am interested in Psych. For those of you who work in this field, what is your favorite group of patients to work with?
Thanks
Ellie
I have worked with just about all populations. They all have their good points. The hoplessness of the schizophrenic and MR patients wares on me. I loved working with women who had survived severe abuse in childhood. Even though they were usually borderline and self destructive, their problems were all in the learned behavior range. Anything that has been learned can be unlearned. They are a hard population to deal with but they have potential for complete recovery.
Thank GOD! I am SO glad there is someone who has a heart for this particular sub-group. I myself have a difficult time dealing w/the borderline/self-destructive pt. Thanks for the hopeful words.

Hi I am in psychiatry for the last 7 yrs,
presentl;y in Counter insurgency area, where suicides, alcholoism and anxiety is the norm, its very interesting to work with these guys, learning how they manage in the remots field areas, away from families and friends, looking into the face of the enemy who is none but one of our own.

Ignorant, here.
Would you be so kind as to explain what counter-insurgency area is? I presume it's an active military thing. Oh, and, what is meant by "none but one of our own"? Are you being philosophical? I'm puzzled. Please enlighten me.
Thanks.
schiz adults...always fascinating, rarely dull. borderlines suck me dry, depressions bring me down, youth units make me give up on humanity (mostly from their life stories).
Hi anichols. So true about youth units, sad, it's where I used to work. Still do prn depending on the facility. I have worked over 7 years in a RTC, male adolescents. Such a trying population and many are dual diagnosis. Pretty much have the full gamut as above. Borderlines definitely suck you dry and do take allot of my time, however I do enjoy them as much as the schiz and bi-polars. We did have our share of take-downs, therapeutic holds & seclusions. But, I also think we helped allot of these misplaced kids too.

I love Child / Adol! There's nothing like being cussed out by a 6yo! :)
I like the little ones who are all behavioral and I like the adolescents that are happy psychotic who's voices tell them jokes. I also like borderline pts. I know what you're thinking...I'm crazy! :roll
I love this field.
