Do any of you work at unique fields in nursing? I've seen job postings and saw positions like Infertility nurse, cosmetic surgery, medical spa nurse, IV infusion nurse... etc. I thought these were very interesting and was wondering if there are any more? I love exploring options and I'm aiming towards less acute settings for the future... I already know bedside is not for me but I'm sticking with it for now.
I've heard of:
Antarctic nursing
Royal Australian Flying Doctors Service (flight nursing combined with remote area nursing)
My last clinical placement was in paediatric outpatients. Everything ranging from bloods to infusions to wounds (in conjunction with plastics outpatients) to growth hormone tests to endoscopies, MRI's, CT's and IT's under GA to NG tube insertion, etc
I heard you can make big bucks working for Medicare. Your job is to visit patients who are eligible for medicare and basically explain to them their benefits and help them fill out the applications. You can't get farther from the bedside than that
Other things: How about product rep either for medication or in the OR. Although an RN license isn't necessary to be a product rep some companies prefer to higher people with medical backgrounds. When you work in the OR (after being trained of course) during the surgery you explain to the surgeons how their products/tools work. Its a lil scary but I've seen spinal operations and heard the surgeon call out "so what next?" :) But I suppose everyone needs to be trained when it comes to new stuff. You also would do in-services to the nurses to show them how to put the device together, why its better than the old product, etc. etc.
There are lots of research nurses at the hospital where I work.
We have several disaster management nurses which seems to be popular since homeland security funds these positions.
Some other non bedside jobs I can think of are infection control, risk management and nurses staff our poison control hotline.
I have done some unique, out of the hospital type nursing jobs. I worked as a public health nurse in the immunization clinic, the infectious disease clinic, and the pregnancy prevention clinic for my county. I have done home health, worked as a RN one on one with a child for the local school district. I worked at a birth center, and assisted in home births with a CNM/LM. For 7 years I was the nursing director of an extreme sports camp.
Currently I have my own business doing medical standby for special events (bike races, skateboarding/BMX events, open houses for businesses, festivals, gymnastic meets etc) and have worked a few movie sets. I am a high end nanny, and am booked as a newborn nurse for a family in Oct-Dec. I just worked a camp because a nurse had to leave for a few weeks. I do private duty, and occasionally care for infants-adults with special needs.
But last week, I did accept a job as a school nurse. Being self employed, I have not had health insurance as I don't qualify for an individual plan. The school nurse position is only part time, so I have plenty of time to continue to be self employed. Even though it's part time, they pay 100% of my health insurance.

I know one RN who went back to school for Information Technology. He's now a network specialist at a neraby 500 bed facility. He still picks up a weekend shift a couple of times a month or helps out in the ER when it's busy so he can maintain his clinical skills as well as get an idea of the computer issues the nurses on the floors may have.
