What do TX RNs make?

Published

I am pursuing a degree in nursing. I used to live in TX and am hoping to return to TX when my girls leave high school...about eight more years(Hey, I'm an early planner:)) Anyway, I am hoping to be an RN with five years' experience by the time I move back to TX and want to be in Salado to be exact....so I could work anywhere from Austin to Round Rock to Darnall to wherever. How much do experienced RNs make here? Also, as I will be an outsider, will that hurt me?TIA!

Wow I applied to St. David's and had no clue that many applied!!! I live in the Houston area and it's tough for new grads to get a job. Seems like 100 people apply for the same position. I'm applying everywhere in the state to increase my chances but Houston is my first choice

That's the same number that recruiters in Austin are quoting. It's a really tough market right now. Good luck in your search!

Thanks!!! I'm really trying to stay positive during the job hunting but it's hard some days

I graduated in December 2010 with my associates RN. If you want to work in the medical center I suggest getting your BSN because thats what most seem to be requiring or going with. I applied at St. Lukes and got the thanks but no thanks letter.

I received one offer at an HCA hospital in the ER for $25.30 an hour and turned it down. I ended up taking a job in the ICU of a Houston suburb hospital for $28.73 an hour. Not bad and five minute drive to work.

TexnMedic besides HCA would would be other good hospitals to apply to in the suburbs??

I'd say HCA, Tenet, and Christus hospitals. It seemed like all of the Hermanns, St. Lukes, and Methodist hospitals wanted BSNs. I had the most call backs from HCA hospitals, but also have 7 years of paramedic experience which may have helped. I didnt interview for any "GN" postings.

I'm curious..why did you turn the ER offer down? Was it because it was an HCA hospital?

I'm applying to various internships but I'm guessing if I don't get any (and I'm REALLY hoping I do!), that I'll have a better chance after I pass my boards.

It had nothing to do with being an HCA hospital. My girlfriend works for an HCA hospital and has been there three years. It just had to do with the drive being further than I wanted and getting a job closer to home that paid over $3 more an hour not including shift diff. Its all about the money, hospital reputation, and most importantly the drive.

Cool. Well, congrats on the position!

Congrats on the position! I know first hand out competitive jobs are in Houston, I have been looking for months now.. and its frustrating!
