i live in boston, i graduated from a well known school of science with a bs in health sciences and then got my adn . i am more than qualified to work in a great hospital but i still can't find a job where i want to work so i have to ask...what the bleep happened to the shortage???????? :argue: every time someone says "oh, you won't have a problem getting a job as a nurse, there's such a demand" i just wanna kick them in the stomach but instead i say "oh no my friend, there are more nurses in ma than the states knows what to do with". i feel a little betrayed, schools don't tell you that the shortage is over in ma and go get a bsn because thats what hospitals really want and that's if you can get them to look at your resume . does anyone else feel this way or am i just bitter that there is no shortage!
To Nurseismade RN, thanks for the advice, I currently have a job in pedi at a health center, I'm only a few days in, and all I can think about is starting IV's, passing meds, doing assessments....I am very grateful for my job but I've always seen myself in med/surg or tele, def not pedi at a health center. I always thought agencies required you to have at least 1 years experience, do you know?
There's no shortage, never has been. People are finally starting to see that. And with the huge flood of nurses from overseas that should be coming in 2009 d/t changes in immigration laws, pertaining mostly to nurses, there is soon to be a huge surplus, imo.
No bill has been passed, there was a proposed bill, that has gone no place. US in under retrogression and limiting how many immigrants can come in.
Check out the international forum here, is seemes like no one has immigrated since 2006.
I discovered that too and I HAVE a BSN. The hospitals seem to be hiring towards diversity more and more. I had one Boston hospital string me along for 6 months and then didn't even get an interview. BUT... There is a shortage elsewhere. I'm working out of state and still living in MA, the hospital I'm at has great beni's and the pay is MORE than I'd make in MA, Even Boston. Its kind of a poorly kept secret that the Boston Hospitals don't hire anything less than a BSN UNLESS you have a few years experience. I too wanted to work in Boston (thats where my clinical where) but I'm much happier and the morale is so much better at my hospital. keep up your search and consider looking out of state. Good Luck.

I was thinking RI or NH but I didnt think they took MA licensed RN's because MA wasnt part of the pact. I'd def apply in RI bc its so close.
OK, so I have been coming on allnurses.com since I graduated in May and agreeing with all of the new grads about the non existent nursing shortage, but never posted anything. I went to nursing school out of state, at a top nursing school, and also have a previous degree. But, I am orig from MA, and coming back here even with the connections I have through my medically connected family, has not helped me get a job whatsoever. I have come to realize you cannot just move here and get hired as a new grad, you had to have gone to school here, AND worked as a CNA. I pretty much was told this at Children's where I interviewed. They said: We take all of our new nurses from Northeastern. This I though was ridiculous, and not diverse for this wonderful institution.
I ended up (so randomly) getting hired this week at a different hospital. I received a phone call on mon, interviewed on tues, and was hired a few hours later at a great hospital in the city. Please, please do NOT lose hope! You WILL get hired. Just keep applying everywhere. It may just take some time. Take it from me, I was in your shoes just a few days ago. I spent everyday since May applying for jobs online. I even showed up at some places unannounced, and only got 1 phone call from that. I thought maybe nursing was just not meant to be. But take it from me: You WILL get hired. Keep telling yourself this. Keep applying. It will happen when you least expect it to. It happened to me and it will for all of you, too!

When I got out of nursing school back in '93 the same thing happened. The nursing shortage disappeared into thin air. So, I got a job in LTC and then eventually worked my way into acute care when the shortage resurfaced.
