i live in boston, i graduated from a well known school of science with a bs in health sciences and then got my adn . i am more than qualified to work in a great hospital but i still can't find a job where i want to work so i have to ask...what the bleep happened to the shortage???????? :argue: every time someone says "oh, you won't have a problem getting a job as a nurse, there's such a demand" i just wanna kick them in the stomach but instead i say "oh no my friend, there are more nurses in ma than the states knows what to do with". i feel a little betrayed, schools don't tell you that the shortage is over in ma and go get a bsn because thats what hospitals really want and that's if you can get them to look at your resume . does anyone else feel this way or am i just bitter that there is no shortage!

I am not looking forward to job hunting. I am not picky and well aware. However, with lower reimbursements in MA and the economy going the way it is in general. A lot of places are leaning towards cutting hours and simply not hiring, to in some situations (what I gather from Media reports) to even laying off people.
Work is out there for nurses. However, per diem at one place isn't going to cut it for this almost 30 year old male who still lives at home.
I know I will eventually find work as an LPN (once I graduate, etc.) I don't expect to be a millionaire. I do expect however to complete my simple dream of being a Full-time Nurse somewhere (Psych/Geri/Sub-Acute) and eventually moving out of here will take a very long time. I knew I would have to wait to find a job and it would take time originally. I won't look until I pass my boards. But I am hearing things now, hiring freezes and (LPNS don't work in hospitals in MA) even impeding lay offs in the larger hospitals. Unknown if nursing staff will be affected.
The governor of MA froze Insurance Rate increases and opened a huge can of worms between providers and insurance companies. Bottom line is everyone is getting reimbursed less, on top of CMS Medicare and Medicaid Issues and the nursing home bed tax money being taken from the nursing homes in MA and put back into the State General Fund
I am proud of my education so far and I graduate in July. Lets hope it works. If I stay at home, I have enough resources saved up for a long time with out steady work.
This is like the whole process of getting into nursing school you jump through all of these hoops. Get in get the process done. Most rational people know that they aren't going to walk into big city hospital and get a job on the first time.
What is scary as in any health care economic situation nurses take the hit big time.
I heard similar stories of things happening 20 years ago in Health Care with nursing lay offs. I think this mainly was due to City and County Hospitals closing and smaller hospitals merging and closing due to over bedding (too many hospitals) and cuts in insurance rates.
Then the prized Sub-Acute was born... well guess what CMS is butchering next...
One thing I will never do is be a CEO or CFO of Hospital or SNF, how they make this stuff work is beyond me.
