i live in boston, i graduated from a well known school of science with a bs in health sciences and then got my adn . i am more than qualified to work in a great hospital but i still can't find a job where i want to work so i have to ask...what the bleep happened to the shortage???????? :argue: every time someone says "oh, you won't have a problem getting a job as a nurse, there's such a demand" i just wanna kick them in the stomach but instead i say "oh no my friend, there are more nurses in ma than the states knows what to do with". i feel a little betrayed, schools don't tell you that the shortage is over in ma and go get a bsn because thats what hospitals really want and that's if you can get them to look at your resume . does anyone else feel this way or am i just bitter that there is no shortage!
The biggest piece of advice I can give you guys is get a job somewhere, even if it is NOT a hospital. I always thought that if i got a job in an outpatient clinic then I would NEVER get into a hospital. The opposite was true. I graduated with a BSN in 5/07, worked in an outpatient pedi clinic (while every day applying for hospital jobs). Just 2 months ago I got a call from Mass General. I ended up getting the job on a medical unit and have been there for a month. I absolutely love it. They told me the reason they picked me over other applicants, was because I put myself out there and got a job somewhere. I didn't sit on my license and wait for a hospital job. So basically I had to wait 2 years, to get into what I wanted. It was long worth the wait, and I can see myself at this hospital forever.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!
I think jobs are difficult to get. Everyone wants someone with a connection, or with experience . so it is true, you might have to take what you didn't like but it will lead to better things. And every path of nursing is useful. It will give you a little more knowledge than someone else...or more for you to share with others.
there is a shortage in my unit. We are mandated to stay until we are done with our patients. It is at least 3 nurse with an hour of two of OT nightly. We are so tired we just want to go home, but the money is nice also.
good luck
I agree... that it isn"t easy finding work for what you really want. Yet there is a shortage.
I am in Worcester and well lets say there are like 3 posts a week in the newspaper or the internet job boards. Usually, it is the same one re-posted. Most places aren't advertising work either. If you go to websites to facilities in your area you can find positions. It seems Management is the shortage here. They want you to have some kind of management experience, which I don't have that is for sure.
I had to do the strategy of doing travel nurisng in the Southwest in order to get hospital experience. I kind of lucked out, because I started in Med/Surg and ended up training in Tele/ICU. I wasn't necessarily in the best of places, but I serioulsy stuck it out till the end.
I don't mind doing LTC, but the shifts I want aren't there. Stinks, because when I graduated in 05 jobs were readily available and 2nd shift was always open. With a new baby in the home full-time or day shift is not an option with hubby working first shift. I might have to end up doing every weekend in order to get some kind of income in the household. Who knows something I want could open up and I would surely say they would give me dibs over hiring someone on the outside.
Absolutely stinks I tell ya, for the New Grad and the experienced RN.
A friend of mine told me things are getting better and hospitals started hiring. Is that true??
I have seen more and more positions at hospitals. :yeah:I applied to 5 positions in two weeks. Unfortunately, I wasnt' chosen for two, but three are still pending.
In the meantime, I am going to do agency, until I get what I want. I had some offers, but the pay was too low or they wanted full-time. But, there are jobs out there, keep looking!

there are currently 26 PRN RN's on our call list at a small, rural 108 bed hospital.......that tells me that more nurses are wanting to work than jobs open to them......at least in this area.....
