getting back into hospital nursing
looking for some advice...I obtained my BSN in nursing 8 years ago. out of college, did 1 year med-surg at prestigious hospital in Boston. I learned ALOT there! then I had my children, and needed very specific hours, so I left and went into ambulatory care x 7 years. now as my children are older, looking to get back into the hospital, but having difficulty even getting a call back from any of them. looking for community hospital at this point, as I need something close to home. any advice on how to get back in? i probably shouldn't have left but only option at the time.

One more try
Sorry, I just re-read your post, and saw you live south of Boston. I just checked Harvard Vanguard's website. They have a TON of LPN positions for flu clinics coming up. This is an EASY and GREAT way to make some extra $$$. I always sign up for flu clinics.

I'm not sure where you live, but go to http://www.fallonclinic.com. They have a FT LPN position in internal medicine in Webster. Also, apply for the RN positions as well. They often hire LPN's for the RN positions. I have a BSN and have been a RN for 2 yrs and love it there. I started there as a new grad as well. Good luck! Also, check out Harvard Vanguard if you live in the Boston area. :)

Rethink my career path: PharmD VS PMH-NP
I say...if you were lucky enough to get accepted to pharmacy school, stick with it! I've been trying to get into a PharmD program since the year 2000, and chose nursing as a 2nd profession, and spend every day of my life regretting not getting better grades my 1st yr of college. i am now a nurse with a BSN contemplating finally applying to pharmacy again, or possibly NP program. good luck!

A New RN, Quit Job after 5 Months
Hi there.....i totally feel what you went through, because i am going through the same thing. I have been off orientation for 2 months now, and every morning i have to go into work i have a full-fledged panic attack. i vomit every single morning and know hospital nursing isn't for me. i left a clinic job, that i am dying to go back to. also they still have my RN position open at that clinic, so i think they would take me back. the only reason i tried hospital nursing is b/c everyone told me to be a good nurse, you have to work in a hospital. DON'T listen to them! There are other jobs that are less stressful, and satisfying at the same time. the biggest mistake i ever did was quit my old job, to transfer to hospital work. i feel like i let my family down, b/c the hospital pays more, and has better benefits, but they are losing the real "me" every single day of my life. i haven't been myself for months. i worry every single minute of every day that i have to step foot back in the hospital. it's really sad. anyway, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone, and you WILL find your niche someday.... take care and good luck, :):)

help!
yeah, we rarely get 4 patients during the day. it's almost always 3. i really haven't worked alot of nights, but from what i see, its usually 4-5 patients. that is one thing i am grateful of. i can't imagine handling more than 3 patients and feeling like i am giving good care.

med surg floor, high acuity. we get 3-4 patients in day, and 5-6 at night

help!
So I started my 1st hospital job in one of the most prestigious hospitals in MA about 3-4 months ago. Prior to this, I did an outpatient job x 1 year and 1/2. Everyone always says that you need hospital experience to really be a good nurse. Plus, I took the job for more $ and bragging rights I guess. Big mistake. I have never been so miserable in my life. I take my heart rate at work and its in the 130's. On my way to work every morning I envision myself turning my car around and driving across country and just running away from everything. I don't even care at this point about putting this job on a future resume or anything. I hate it that much. I would rather take care of less acuity patients instead of being hazed and given the worst patients on the floor every day that are about to code. I have thought many times about just not showing up the next shift, but guilt overcomes me. I definitely want to either look for another job in outpatient (where i was much happier), or in another field altogether. I will be starting to see a counselor next week...that is how miserable i am. I spend every day off worrying about the next day i have to go back to this place. please help! do you think i should quit for my own sanity? is any job worth this much stress? am i not giving it enough time? any advice is greatly appreciated! thanks

What The Bleep Happened To The Shortage?
The biggest piece of advice I can give you guys is get a job somewhere, even if it is NOT a hospital. I always thought that if i got a job in an outpatient clinic then I would NEVER get into a hospital. The opposite was true. I graduated with a BSN in 5/07, worked in an outpatient pedi clinic (while every day applying for hospital jobs). Just 2 months ago I got a call from Mass General. I ended up getting the job on a medical unit and have been there for a month. I absolutely love it. They told me the reason they picked me over other applicants, was because I put myself out there and got a job somewhere. I didn't sit on my license and wait for a hospital job. So basically I had to wait 2 years, to get into what I wanted. It was long worth the wait, and I can see myself at this hospital forever. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

RN job offer during the hiring freeze era??
Hi, I graduated 5/07 with a BSN in nursing and have been looking for a hospital job ever since (i do outpatient right now). I applied to every hospital in the state except Springfield over the past 2 years, and only got invited for 2 interviews--both of which were given to internal candidates. My luck seemed to change a few weeks ago, when I got called by Mass General in Boston to interview for a position. The interview I thought went really well... they called me yesterday to come back next week to meet the staff, and shadow a nurse for 4 hrs. I am really excited and think that finally after my long wait, I might get an offer!! YAY!! My recommendation is to get a job somewhere if you can (even if it is not a hospital). i always had this fear that if i took an outpatient job, I would NEVER get into a hospital....i'm starting to think that it doesn't matter. what employers seem to be looking for is "confidence." I know MGH posted a few new grad positions on their website a few days ago..try applying for those, you never know....you might get a call like i did :) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
