Are there some states that dont have nursing shortages and others that do? Or is it a nation wide problem? Thanks in advance.
Even within states, shortages are regional. Take Ohio, where I live. I'm in Toledo, and due to the large number of nursing schools in NW OH, nursing jobs are competitive. I'm still in school, and considering getting my Michigan license even though MI's economy is so bad. Nursing grads from last semester are getting jobs easily in Mich (not as many nursing schools comparably), but are having trouble here in NW Ohio.
Other parts of Ohio have nursing shortages, as I read. It seems to have a lot to do with the number of schools in the area from my experience.
i think every state is regional. In northern california where I am for nursing school there is a huge competition for new grad RN programs. However, where I live in southern california I've already had several places say they will hire me. many of my classmates are now considering the move.
Follow the baby boomers!!! Florida, Arizona, Nevada, California---- where the weather is nice!!!!
Hey MICHIGANRN..... just out of curiosity.... I would think that in a place like Michigan, where you hear about the troubled economy, there would be less jobs. Why so many openings? Are nurses leaving for states with a better economy? Whacha think?

I really don't know. Seems rather odd. I receive a ton of recruitment stuff from area hospitals including the one where I used to work. There is a need for nurses because at the hospital where I last worked, about 10 nurses left the unit that I used to work on and there are many openings for other nursing positions at that hospital. Some moved up to northern Michigan, so went to California or are doing travel nursing.I think nurses are just trying to find a hospital that has the better benefits such as medical/dental and retirement, like the hospital where I work now.
I think a lot of the auto companies are moving their facilities out of state because they don't want to deal with the unions any more and Michigan is losing a lot of money because of it.
The economy in Michigan sucks right now but there are plenty of open nursing positions where I live.
And if you want to get a house on the cheap they can be found. My wife was telling my yesterday that her brother found her niece one in Detroit for get this $14,000. She didn't say how much more they spent fixing it up but knowing him I would guess not much more than another $10,000. SO a 3br for less than $25,000.

Property taxes in Detroit are outrageous. I'm talking about almost $6,000 bucks per year. Do you know where in Detroit their house is? I'm just curious. There are a lot of nice houses in Detroit. The sad part is, is that the city has never been the same since the 1960s.
She didnt say where at , but on a 25k house they would not be so much. Here brother is in Southfield, MI. We use to be in Northville. Were in sunny FL now. The wages here stink for what its worth. I have been here 3 yrs and still make less than what I did there.
