I had my 1st OR experience today in Clinical today and it was really great. I am a 1st semester ADN student doing a Med/Sug rotation in a post-surg unit. My pt today had needed to go in for a cystoscopy, retrograde pyeloragram and a ureteroscopy.

I was just curious to see what others had for their 1st OR experience and did you think it was a good experience for you?

Thank you for your thoughts!

I got to do all the Foley's that day and I think I was the first student in my class to do any. OTher than that, I stood at the side and watched.

My 2nd semester (Med/Surg) I got to see a laminectomy and a laparoscopic cholecsystectomy. This semester (OB/Peds) I've seen two c-sections. Very cool to watch and I'm glad I had the experience, but it drove the point home that surgery will not be my niche as a nurse. Too clinically detached from actual patient care for me...

he he it seems we are all have almost the same experience.

my first day in O.R was during medical surgical course and i also attend cystoscopy with bilateral injection of ureters. i get from there upset because i expect to see alot of blood and cutting in O.R but in this experience i didn't see even a 1 drop of blood.

During a med/surg rotation on an orthopedics floor I got to see a hip replacement. It was like being in an auto mechanics shop or wood-working shop!! I swear I'd seen most of the tools used during that surgery in either of those shops ...only not sterile, of course :D

I loved the OR and would have loved to go into that specialty if only I thought my bladder would hold up! LOL

Last night... 2 hrs in the O.R. I got to see a ORIF of the hip. It's brutal I feel bad for the patients from now on.. You have one leg twisted one way and another leg twisted another... The surgeon looked like a neanderthol.... Had his lil hammer banging on the bone.... You could see the adipose tissue and blood going up the tip of the drill. I was a construction worker in a previous life... it was like the same thing except with Aseptic technique. I loved it. I think if I had to start all over again 8 yrs ago I'd become a surgeon. He was nice enough to ask questions @ the end... like will the pt need hip precautions?.... weight bearing on weight bearing?..... He even did an ORIF on the teddy bear the old lady brought in and wrapped her rosary beeds around it was to cute... Very good experience.

My first was a lady partsl D and C. The RN made me clean the lady parts with iodine. I had to stick this sponge up there, and, somewhat forcefully, wipe down the lady partsl walls. It was soooo tramautic for me

Specializes in ICU, Informatics.

My first OR experience (during my first semester) was a right frontal parietal craniotomy. It was awesome! I came close to seeing an abdominal surgery that day, but time was up.

My first OR experience happened during my Med-Surg rotation during my 2nd semester. I got to see a Lapband being placed.

The only reason why I'm going to nursing school is to become an OR nurse. I've always been fasicnated with Anatomy for as long as I can remember. My TV stays on Discovery Health.

Since then, I've signed up for every OR experience I could. I got to see a DNC, C-Section, GYN surgery to remove a fibroid from the uterus, and several thoratic exacerbations during my Peds rotation.

I've also observed a colonoscopy as well.

I just like the environment of the OR. The surgeons and the nurses work together like a team. I didnt observe much yelling or anything like that. Plus, the stories they tell during surgery would put most sailors to shame....:lol2:

a facelift!

the surgeon was extremely nice and all the nurses told me how great he is to work with. I loved the whole experience and would definitely consider taking a job in the OR if offered a position in the future. Funny how many years ago I saw a facelift on an HBO special about aging/finding the fountain of youth and had to change the channel when they started manipulating the skin...but had no problems watching this one!
