"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
Working labor and delivery, providing mom's with breastfeeding support, and when we bring the baby's back to mom, and it's time for the baby to nurse, or when the nursery nurse is checking on mom's feedings, and nurse asks, "When did you feed the baby last" mom says, "Oh, I was suppose to feed her?, Do you feed her in the nursery?"The nursery nurse then gets a little confused about mom's feeding preference and asks how she intends to feed her baby, and mom states, "I'm going to breastfeed."
So what do you tell them? A baby has no schedual and will eat whenever they damn well want. Do you slam the door in their face?
Oh how I wish that I could just hand them back their baby and push them back in the direction of their room......but I keep my mouth shut like a good nurse "babysitter" and take the baby into the nursery.....and boy do they hate me when I bring the baby back screaming a half hour later!!!!
Manytimes When We Sk Our Mom's If They Would Like To Have A Lactation Specialist Help Them Breastfeed, They Say "no I Will Wait Till I Get Home Because I Don't Hav Any Milk. I'll Just Give Them A Bottle. Another Thing That Kinda Irks Me Is The Pt Calls To See The Nurse. We Always Ask Can She Bring You Anything? "no" You Get To The Room And They Want Juice Or Towels Or Somthing That Could Have Been Brought To The Room When You Went The First Time. Oh Well "i Have The Time"
I feel undermined when ready to start an IV and the patient informs me that the other nurses had to stick them umteen times before they got it in the right place. Not exactly a confidence building statement!
Another painful situation was when a fellow employee repeatedly told her patients that she wanted to check their "fungus."

Yikes!! What those patients must have thought!
I am a student nurse and I was working with a nurse the other day who was telling her patients that cytotec was a chemotherapy drug. I finally said I thought she was thinking of methotrexate and cytotec is usually for stomach problems. She didn't believe me but looked it up later and was surprised. I can't imagine being told I was given chemotherapy to induce labor or stop bleeding.

This one just kills me everytime it comes up!!!!
Patient (Mom or Dad) brings newborn to the nursery and tells us...."No pacifiers, No formula and don't bring the baby back to the room until the next scheduled breastfeeding" which they want to be about 3 hours after the last feeding!!! So what do they suggest I do with their hungry, rooting, screaming child??
OOOHHHHHH makes me soooo crazy!!!
