In the 60's and previous to that, there were hospital based nursing schools where yoiu lived, learned and worked in the hospital for no pay. You paid them. So after three years of this, you were issued a diploma. The emphasis was on experience working in the hospital. In the 80's, these programs phased out, but some of them still exist with an ASS or ADN program attached to it, so you get the hospital experience and you get an associates degree too. You can always continue on for a bachelor's all the way up to a PHD. Personally, I love the idea, because you get the hospital experience that you truly need. I was supposed to go to a hospital diploma program before associate degrees were attached to them, went to a four year college program instead and never got the experience I needed. If I had it all to do over again, I would start with the diploma/associates degree first and get the experience needed. I don't think the four year college programs give enough experience . Nursing programs are quite competitive. I would do it this way considering that your GPA was low. I think it is the better way anyway, so I say go for it, and learn from my mistakes. Krisssy
