What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?

And did you have to treat them?

I am just curious. Your stories always seem to either crack me up or shake my head in amazement.

Thanks for sharing ?

HERE- HERE I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 4 DAYS FROM A STONE. I HAD A MAJOR INFECTION IN MY BLADDER AND KIDNEYS. THE URINE WAS GOING BACK INTO MY KIDNEYS. THERE WAS SO MUCH BLOOD IN MY URINE THE NURSE TRIED TO TELL ME THAT I WAS ON MY PERIOD:angryfire . SO SHE CATH ME AND SHE FOUND OUT DIFFERENTLY. RAN OUT OF THE ROOM TO GO THE DR AND I WAS ADMITTED AND GIVEN A COCK-TAIL OF MORPHINE AND DILAUDID FOR PAIN. I WAS ON PAIN MEDICINE FOR 2-3 DAYS. WHEN I WOKE UP IT WAS FROM THE PAIN OF SO MANY SHOTS OF PAIN MEDS IN MY A**:rotfl: . I TOLD THE NURSE TO GET THE DR IN HERE TO GET THOSE STONES OUT. I WENT TO THE OR AND STENTS WERE PUT INTO MY URETERS AND THE NEXT DAY I WAS SENT HOME WITH ATB AND PERCOCET. THERE WERE SO MANY INFECTIONS FROM THE RIPPING OF THE STONES PASSING IT WAS UNREAL. I TRIED ABOUT 5 DIFFERENT ATB. I WOULD RATHER HAVE HAD 10 BABIES THAT ALL WEIGH 20LBS A PEICE THAT TO EVER DEAL WITH THAT AGAIN. THAT HURT. I FEEL THE PAIN ALL OVER AGAIN JUST TELLING YOU ALL ABOUT IT.:chuckle

Now why in the world would you even think that it would be silly to go to the ER for that? I had a kidney stone years ago. It was probably the worst pain I ever felt in my life!

Geez... That sound horrible. I hope I never get a stone or pass a stone or anything like that. Once in the hospital for SVT they put in a foley cause of all the fluids they were giving me. I think I was like on 6 IV pumps for a couple different things like TPN and white looking fat juice? something like that. But anyways after a day or so on the foley it started to look pink, then one day it was just bright red and I would look at the tubing going down my leg and big red blood clots were passing through. That was probably the most painful thing I have ever felt and they didn't give me anything for pain. I was so pissed!

I thought getting meningitis twice in 2 years was the most painful thing but in those cases they actually gave me meds. It just makes me so upset when docs are so mean about giving pain meds. I mean come on, bright red blood coming out of my bladder! HELLO?!

This post is so funny! I LOVE IT...:rotfl:

Had a patient come in last week by ems from the other side of town, c/o N/V/D. per EMS. Pt gets there and denies being ill, he just want the ER MD to do his paperwork so he can get one of those little hoveround scooters to get around in, and he also wanted a cab voucher to get back home in.

Unfortunaely one of local offduty PD was in the next bed with a friend who was really sick.He of course heard everything, he came over and talked with the pt. All the ended up getting was a ride to the local jail for Abuse of the EMS.

Keep it in the short grass

I remember working at a big uniersity hospital ER as a tech and having a homeless man who was a frequent flyer who would come in everyother day or everyday almost complaining of chest pain just so he could get a warm bed to sleep in and a hot meal.

He had a million dollar workup when he began this rountine that included a echo, chest x-rays, angiogram and you name it, EVERYTHING that determined he had absolutely nothing wrong with his heart and yet he could come in and say Yes I guess I am having chest pains and those words would get him back immediately and a stay for the night. I mean it was so awful. He would immediately turn over on his side and request a warm blanket so he could sleep.. And its not like we couldn't tell he was sleeping cause the man SNORED so loud!!

It is such an awful abuse to the system, and just knowing that our tax dollars are paying for this. I mean come on, why do these people do this to us?

Because he has no where else to go and get the attention and safety he is craving

My aunt was working at a regional hospital before she moved back home, they had a man who lived in their break room for weeks.

That's right, they have nowhere to go and when that's the case, faking an illness and putting up with any subsequent tests isn't such a bad deal, and a hospital room, even a shared one, is a pretty nice place to be. It's safe and warm. There's always someone around to talk to ( I imagine being elderly and homeless is pretty lonely), and nice nurses come ask how you're feeling and bring you hot meals 3 times day, as well as the occasional snack. Many elderly folks have a variety of aches and pains, and being out in the elements can't be easy on them. For the duration of their stay, their medicated, even if it's only aspirin, so the aches are gone. They get to rest in the hospital, and not worry about someone stealing the blankets off of them while they sleep. They have access to a bathroom, rather than the bushes.

Last of all, even the homeless have pride, especially the elderly. It is easier for them to call friends and family and say that they're in the hospital than to say they are on the streets.

If only budgets allowed for hiring someone to help the individuals find a more acceptable alternative. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention, and in this case it so very true. So much time and money could be saved if these people were dealt with differently right from the start.

First time mom...brand new baby...CC:"Belly button fell off"

The scab of the remaining umbilical cord fell off...

First time parents in ER at 3am "The baby will not stop crying"... " We changed her and fed her and now she just keeps on crying." Charge Nurse in the ER put the baby on her shoulder, patted its back, baby burped, baby went to sleep.

0230 am middle aged male c/o flu-like symptoms for four years!

About 0430 am Mom obviously trashed along with friend who drove them to our ER brings in 5 y/o with c/o N&V (dried vomited on child's night shirt). Understand they drove to us from a near by city with plenty of hospitals. The kicker they wanted a prescription yah you heard me for Tylenol. We did a work up on the kid and she was fine PO challenge included. We'll I couldn't let the child get back into a car with a drunks one passed out on the stretcher with the kid. The other passed out in the waiting room. I pressed for time by telling Mom that Tylenol was so strong we couldn't keep it in the ER, and we had to wait for pharmacy to bring it to us. Meanwhile I did the only thing I could and police were on there way. We they arrived they kicked the stretcher several times to wake Mom finally when she woke up very surprised I must add they ran her info. A couple minutes later she was cuffed and heading for jail for several outstanding warrants. They waited outside for the driver to get into his car when they arrested him for DWI. I kept the kid until Grandma arrived to pick her up. All over a prescription for Tylenol. :p

The police had raided a crack house. In the refrigerator they found what they thought was a human fetus. They brought it to the ER. It was an oyster.

This should have gone to the County Medical Examiner/Coroner. NOT the emergency room. Police officers should know that.....or did they think you would actually be able to revive the "fetus"?!?! :uhoh3:
