What does it mean to learn?

hi all,

i want to post a question. i would like to get as many answers as possible. answer the question however you want. it could be a definition, how you do it, what it means to you, how you think we as humans do it etc. your answer could be a mixture of ideas and be as brief or as lengthy as you like. the question is.........

what is learning?

For me learning is part of my growing as a person. I just graduated from Nursing school 3 weeks ago and I feel as though this is the begining of a new chapter in my life. I am not the same person I was at the begining of college. I am looking forward to continuing my growth and my learning :)

What about forgetting? Now really do you recall all the bones of the wrist? You knew the names once, but if you don't know them now, why did you learn them at all?

It's better to have learned and lost than never to have learned at all.

The constant assimiliation of new knowledge through research, experience, and observation. Necessary information is retained (hopefully) while superfluous information is circular filed.

Learning is taking new information, committing it to memory, then being able to use it in different situations of life. It's not just memorization--(for example, you remember the mnemonic because it was cute & related to sex, but the names of the bones were memorized for the test, and then as Taz said, sent to the circular file.

But if you were truly interested in the bones of the hand, you'd probably look at several models or a cadaver, see how the bones are connected with tendons, ligaments, cartilage & muscle, and figure out how the arrangement of those bones creates the very impressive human hand. Then you would be able to name the bones because you actually learned them--not just memorized until no longer needed.

I learned a new word mnemonic. I can't remember sequential numbers but I know their positions on keypads so if I have to use numerics as a pass or code to get into something I can do it. This is mnemomic.

To me learning is a constant process, where my brain takes in and assimilates all the material that constantly presents itself, and processses it with the education I received. It is neverending, and ongoing.
