What is the market like in Las Vegas

U.S.A. Nevada

I am about to graduate with my ADN from another state, and I was wondering what it would be like if I wanted to move to Las Vegas. How is the market, are they in need for more RNs? What is a starting wage one would expect? How are the hospitals, low patient to nurse ratios? Thanks for any information and/or tips!

Sorry I can't offer advice, but I can imagine how interesting the emergency room must be for any hospital out there.

Las Vegas Nevada or Las Vegas New Mexico?

As a new grad last year I started at 27.00 per night + night diff and weekend diff. Tough market to crack as there are 6 schools putting out new nurses twice a year. Hospitals are wanting at least 1 year of experience for 99% of the positions. Patient ratios depend on speciality, at the hospital I am in tele 1:7 and IMC 1:5 max. Other hospitals I have heard up to 10 for med surg. Since I have only worked at one hospital I can't tell you what other hospitals are like but it's decent, no major complaints.

My advice is to apply first, and see what kind of response you get, before moving, and then ending up with no job. Good luck!

Hey i thought what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas so why you talking job market. Kidding i have a cousin that is a RN out there and she said it took her almost a yr to find a job. It's pretty tough out there. These are my thoughts use them as you wish...

I would imagine since this post is in the Nevada forum the OP is wanting info about Las Vegas Nevada.

I lived in Vegas for a couple of years 20 years ago and worked in the Sunrise ER - yep really wild.

Lots of weird folks, lots of pediatric near-drownings (everyone has a pool), lots of homeless (the police try to keep them off the strip).

I have lived here for 6 years -- There are 2 million people in Las Vegas, most of them are not Elvis impersonators or drag queens. :nurse:

I am considering a travel ICU position at Desert Springs...have you heard anything good or bad? I'm at Renown in Reno right now in the CVICU getting off a 6 month assignment.

Every hospital expects at least one year hospital experience. Have not gotten one interview in 6 months of trying. Unemployment is very high here. Secure a job before moving unless you have funds to live on for at least a year. Many people who cannot get work wind up being evicted. Plan smart and save yourself a nightmare. Now if you know someone that can get you in, that is your best bet. Make sure you have your BLS certification and all others are a plus.

I have to say the job market is really bad out here. I am graduating in December and its not looking to promising for new grads. I am moving out of state anyway since my boyfriend has a job waiting for him elsewhere. I know everyone thinks the job market is bad where they live, but vegas is just not getting better in my opinion. :( :uhoh3:

Well, they (whoever they are) are saying Vegas is the new Detroit. We don't plan on being here after i finish school. My hubby is a teacher here and it just keeps getting worse and worse!
