What makes you irritated by student nurses?

Published

Hi everyone. I'm just wondering about some opinions that I could maybe learn from. After googling some articles and thoughts of both nurses and student nurses, I am seeing that either some are having a difficult time coping with interactions as a student nurse or maybe are given a hard time by nurses.

We're all human but I'm wondering.. What traits, habits, comments or behaviors make you annoyed or irritate about student nurses?

It doesn't have to be logical but hopefully it is. Just looking for insight and possibly things I can avoid when I get there.

Thanks!

I was merely pointing out the fact that this response would be better understood under a thread with the title "what makes you irritated by nurses in clinicals" in the student nurses forum.

That's all.

lol and all that sort of thing :)

True. ;)

It was still welcome.

For me it would be:

- Not speaking English. I'm half Chinese myself, but honestly I can't teach you anything if you've been in Australia for over two years and still don't understand basic English. There is supposed to be an English test to ensure that international students can actually RECEIVE an education effectively, but it's clearly not up to standard and everybody's time gets wasted so that the university can get some coin. One of my previous students didn't know what a kidney-dish was, nor could I explain it to her, and she was in FINAL YEAR.

- Laziness. "There's just nothing to do..." ---> Yes there is! Just go and even TALK to a patient. We're here for wholistic care, which includes gauging their mood and feelings.

- Know-it-all. "I already know how to take vital signs, I want to learn something interesting". I hear this from students occasionally. I just tell them that they'll always have to do vital signs, get used to the time management, learn the trends and indications, and show me you're committed to the job for the patient, not to look smart and cool while you do that fancy wound dressing.

When I was a student I hated:

- Being referred to as 'the student' rather than my name

- Staff talking behind my back, not addressing vital learning issues with me upfront but instead addressing my education team and management rather than me directly, which resulted in a huge loss of self-confidence and made me so anxious about my environment that I didn't learn well at all.

I love having the majority of our students .....

But a couple of things that irk me:

1. Standing in front of the regular staff during report/handover ... the nurses need to be there, please stand behind

2. Those students who try to trip up the nurses ...particularly the older staff nurses.

That 'holier than thou' attitude - my education is so much better than yours.

The attitude that we have had an education and anyone over the age of 40yrs (old) has only been trained

3. Those who come onto the floor thinking they had better have their battle gear on because

the regular nurses are going to eat them. This hypersensitivity will colour any interaction the student doesn't like or agree with.

Students are welcomed in my area but please bring your good attitude and professional presentation

I have to say that getting your opinions on this has helped me not fear clinicals as much as everyone says I should.

Most of the reasons, if not all are based on common sense that unfortunately isn't so common but... that's another thread.

This is written as an insight as a student nurse. Yes, when I was a student I had to babysit the whacky dementia patient from the nursing home at the bequest of a nurse on the payroll, no, I was not interested in hearing short cuts and time savers and no, I don't give any of this advice to students.

Had you written this post from the perspective of an experienced nurse it might be of some value. Clearly you are not and you may as well have saved yourself the effort by watching Two and a Half Men instead.

So you're foolishly suggesting that an outsider can't come into your world and suggest how change could be made. No, I haven't been a nurse, and people like you make me not want to be one. You're so set in your ways concerned about what you, as a nurse, are. Go back and read my introduction.

I really couldn't care less about your jab at jab at me. You've quite clearly shown your intellect here, and you've quite blatantly ascribed to the attitude that you're too good for students. I can understand you being burned out. I'm sure your closemindedness will take you far. Have a wonderful career.

Nothing. I love students. How else are they supposed to learn in order to teach the next group?

Whenever there are students on the floor I try to remember what it was like when I was in their shoes, meaning that I try to be of assistance in anyway that I can. I guess the only thing that gets under my skin is that sometimes it bothers me when a student does not have common sense, I mean you can't put a whole Colace pill down a peg-tube, I mean come on, but I guess it's true when they say not all sense is common.

Some great advice here. I was a student as recently as 18 months ago and I try to teach them things that I was struggling with when I started.

- Time management & care planning

- Medications - asking hard questions that I know they will struggle to remember

- And just giving lots of randoms tips, some encouragement and praise where it's due.

Seriously, our ENTIRE PROFESSION doesn't get enough praise from other staff when it's due. But we're the first to cop it when things go pear-shaped.

Please, there's no need. Let's try to not get this thread closed. Thanks.

Uh, no. There was clearly a need. Sorry if you didn't like it. But if you're gonna take a tone like that then expect to get checked.

And actually, THAT is EXACTLY the answer to your question. What makes you irritated by student nurses?? This holier than thou behavior.

Talk to me when you've been in our trenches a while...
