What is the LPN's role with organ donation????

Published

Hi can someone please advise me what the LPN's role is with organ donation or lead me in the right direction? I have done a search but not able to find what I am looking for. Do LPN's just offer support, do the refer them to someone else, get a consent sign ...... please help

Thanks in advance.

I believe that would be facility spec. The hospital were I worked Pastoral care did it!

The hospitals where I have been did not utilize LPNs, so I can't address an LPN's role specifically, but ...

The role of the RN is simply to contact the organ procurement agency. Representatives of that agency evaluate the possibility of organ procurement, speak w/the family, arrange any necessary pre-procurement testing, coordinate w/the transplant team & obtain consents.

At our facility, the havesting company does the talking if the family had consented for donation.

Completely off the beaten path here, but my role is helping in the harvesting of organs and tissue.

It is the responsibility of the organ procurement organization to actually approach the family. Or the physicna, it is definitely not the role of the nurse, be it the RN or the LPN that is on the floor. Check with your hospital specifically as to what their guidelines are.
