What is the longest long day anyone works???

Published

Just out of curiosity I wonder who across the world officially works the longest long day. Rules are travelling time plus working hours......

My regular hours are 07.00 till 19.30 which is a reasonable 12.5 hours plus an hours travelling so 13.5.

My bank ward works 07.00 till 21.00hrs a much more feet wearing, back breaking 14 hours plus an hours travelling so 15 in total.

but my day is a walk in the park compared to a colleague who also works the 07.00 till 21.00hrs but with 2 hours travelling per day, which by my sums makes his day 16 hours. Fine for a one off but two in a row makes my eyes water.

I am sure there are nurses out there working longer so over to you................:nurse:

I worked 20 hours from yesterday till this morning. i am an acute dialysis nurse. i went to work at 6am yesterday and punched out at 2:01am this morning.. i was paged for an add on at the ER. (I was the on call person). I was told the patient had been assigned a room in the imcu and should wait to start there. It took almost 2 hours for patient to get to the unit. I got a page again whille working on my last patient to set up a SLEDD at the ICU. I left work very exhausted. The good thing with my employer is that they allow you to take yourself off the schedule for the next day if You are scheduled to work so i got today off. I love doing acute dialysis but the hours are crazy.

The maximum I worked at once is a 16 hour shift.

Hurricane Rita. Clocked in 1700 Fri evening (already in OT at this point), and did not clock out again until 9 days later when I got to "officially" leave the hospital and return home. They paid us OT for the hours we worked, and straight time for the hours we slept at the hospital, so my pay was double time and over time for a few days. Was exhausted at the end, but man, that paycheck was great!!

It takes me an 1.20min to get to work on Mondays I work 16 hours.

Specializes in Emergency, Critical Care, Pre-Hospital,.

Double shift 0700-2330, 7 min drive each way! Usually 12.5 hrs. 07-1930.

Specializes in Med/Surg, LTC/Geriatric.

I worked a number of double 8 hour shifts, so 16 hours in total. But I live quite close by, so only about 10-15 minute drive each way.

Double time at the start of the 9th hour :D

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.
I takes me 3.5 hours to get to work... added to the 12 hours gets me to 15.5 on my "bookend days" but only 12 on my middle day. 2 hours of OT is not unheard of so the day can get to 17-18. I've pulled a couple of doubles and both times had OT at the end... those ended up being 26-27 hr days.

3 1/2 hrs to get to work?!? Do you have friends you stay with near work or something? I can't imagine that being a feasible drive even 3 times a week.

I just realized this thread is about regular shifts, not extraordinary situations like snow storms. Never mind! :)

Specializes in A and E, Medicine, Surgery.

WOW

I don't know whether to shake my head in absolute awe or be terrified for the patient last to be seen at the end of one of those mammoth shifts!

I love the international perspective on nursing - apart from the humanitatian side I would never have considered the nursing impact of the natural disasters before reading some of these responses. In the UK if more than three inches of snow is forecast it has hospital managers in melt down.
