What is the latest you’ve been called in while being on call?

Published

I work a 7am-7pm shift and I am currently on call. I can’t find my hospitals policy for being on call. So my question is, when’s the latest you’ve been called in? Is there a universal time when you can expect not to be called?

Yeah, I wouldn't have let that one go unnoticed by the manager!

I didn't have a leg to stand on. Technically I was on call until 7pm.

Your HR or staffing department should have a copy of the on-call policy. Contact them and ask.

Last time I was on call, it was until 3AM (for a 7PM to 7AM shift). I rarely agree to be on call, so I'm not sure what's normal. I only did it that night because I was working for someone else who was required to do it.

I wish I could refuse. At my hospital you don't have a choice. And I've been called as late as 0400.

No, on call is exactly what it sounds like. Healthcare isn’t predictable. Lol this actually made me laugh, ?

I work in the OR of a Level 1 trauma center. There is no safe time. With that said, we generally don't get called in between 0600-0700 at the end of call leading into day shift - people are arriving for days and can be asked to clock in early for an emergency if needed.

I've been called back after leaving less than an hour prior (from either a scheduled shift or my first call back). I've seen it all, early in a shift, middle of a call shift, later in the shift. I've been called in multiple times in the same call time (ugh - specialty call over a holiday weekend (puke)).

We don't have a choice, either. I picked up a shift, and when the day came, I looked at the schedule for that night. It looked like they were covered appropriately. I was two hours away so texted the CN and asked what the census was. It was really low. I told them that since it looked like they were covered, and census was low, maybe I'd just stay put (rather than drive the two hours in).

I had to drive in (and ended up being put on call), because our policy states that if you're called off, you're automatically on-call and have to be able to respond in 30 minutes.

So, check your policy--it may vary from place to place.
