it's not about WHAT you know, it's about WHO you know

the harsh reality:

it's not about WHAT you know, it's about WHO you know.

and i have witnessed this a lot of times already. i've seen it happen right in front of me.

Situation #1:

i went to Hospital A at quezon city to apply. the man at the HR told me that they have no opening and that they are not accepting applications. so i stepped aside and just copied the requirements. behind me were 2 girls. the girl approached the man and told him that they'd like to pass they're application. the man told them that they are not accepting applications. the girl handed him a letter then the man said, "oh, so you are the daughter of Mrs. ____" and he accepted the application of the girl and her friend!!! and i was just standing beside them! and then he asked them to proceed to the other room of the HR!!!

Situation #2:

i went to this big hospital in quezon city, Hospital B. as i approach the HR office, there's this huge sign saying that they are not accepting applications for staff nurse position. so again, i just copied the requirements. and beside me (why do i always happen to be near them?), is an applicant accompanied by a staff (which, i heard is her brother), and just went straight inside. i followed shortly and saw them being entertained by the HR, accepting the girl's application, but when it was my turn, i was told that i should've read the sign outside the door that they're not accepting applications. hello??? you're not accepting? what have i just seen?

Situation #3

i have this friend i came across while registering at Hospital B. when i asked him what he's doing there, he told me that he's gonna have his clinical exam for staff nurse at Hospital B. and i ask him when did he apply because i thought Hospital B is freeze hiring. he honestly told me that he's backed by a head nurse!!! great!!! he also told me that Hospital B needs 100+ nurses. but how come it's not posted? oh well, i guess that a lot of those 100+ are gonna be filled up by those applicants with backers.

and the list goes on...

i've read about these things happening, but i refused to believe them until these happened. it's just so bad that i've studied and practiced so hard to get good grades and get a good score on my NLE, and did well in the trainings that i went through. honestly speaking, i believe i have good credentials... but it doesn't matter now... my application would still be bumped off by those applicants with "padrinos" or backers...:o

don't get me wrong though. i'm not mad at those applicants with backers... i just find it unfair... to me and others out there who don't know anybody from any hospital. it's just really saddening...:o

I am guilty of this as well, unfair, yes, but if I didn't gave it a shot I might have been a bum up until now..

yes, really unfair indeed.. I know a lot of friends who were accepted too because they were "endorsed" by someone...hahah "endorsed"...sounds better right?

A lot of my friends asked me why im not using my sister who's a doctor here in our small city to back me up..but its against my principle to do that and so with my sister. How can i take pride for my work when i was just accepted because of that? So here i am still jobless and looking for jobs on my own.. I just hope that this loonnnnnnnnngg months of desperation and frustration wont cause me to change my views...

at least by the time you gt your dream job,you can say to yourself "i earn this" .not owing anyone to back you up,you got the job because they believe you are credible and worthy for the job. not because you are so and so sister or niece or nephew etc. etc.

For those who have connections with big guys, i think it is very practical nowadays to use them but you have to show that you can do the job right. With the tight competition in nursing, it will be your edge over others. Even if you know someone from the inside, you still have to undergo the hiring process. It's the same as going through without the help of someone.

It's not the matter of whom you know, there are employers who can hire you on how smart you answer their questions. Selling yourself for the job needs a lot of practice too.

thanks for your honesty.speaking for myself, yes,i understand you and the rest of those nurses who got the job because of their connections.its the most practical thing to do in this frustrating situation, right?practical and convenient,if you must say.

personally,i just believe that just because this system has been practiced for ages and has become a norm here in our country ,doesnt mean i have to accept it. it doesnt sound right to my conscience...

but really,i have nothing personal against nurses who used their connections.i get your point..maybe we really just differ on what we value more..

This is really a saddened reality! It happens anywhere!:o I hate that kind of system..

Only if only people get a little bit strict when it comes to their system. Well I guess we cannot blame all of this to the government but this has been really really frustrating..

true... this is very saddening. and i had another experience with this system yesterday at a private hospital. i was asked if i know anyone from this hospital and i said no. then the HR directly told me that they are not accepting the applications of those who don't know anyone from the hospital (aka no referral from inside) and that i should just come back on june 2009 to submit my application. *sigh*

Sad to hear that. Don't stop applying until you finish all the hospitals all over Luzon if thats where you are. Until then when no one will accept you thats the time to fret.

Practical indeed. In my case, a lot of people (family friends and BF's relatives) offered to help me find a position in some of the big hospitals here in Manila. I'm not sure what went wrong with me when I declined their offers and decided to look for a nursing job myself and luckily I found one right away. For sure, if I failed in finding a job on my own, I would've come back to them begging to help me. :zzzzz

well, nepotism is very rampant in the philippine society.

In my opinion... i think it's alright to be backed up by someone as long as you're "backable" (just a term i invented hehe) i mean, someone who can really be endorsed, someone with really good credentials, or "who knows something and someone," and not just either one of the two.

When I was in college, I was familiar with the trend already and mind you, it just doesn't happen in nursing, it happens in all professions/careers. Knowing that, I tried to do well in my college so just in case i would really need to be endorsed by someone, i will be deserving of it.

That's just how i think of it, Okay? 'Cos if I'd be in the position of the endorser, I wouldn't really mind endorsing someone who had good credentials. But if that someone I endorse just takes his connections for granted, then that's the time it would really be unfair for the others.

Just like what gemini_star said, "It's very practical to use your big guys nowadays but you have to show that you can do the job right." or better off, show them that you cannot only do the job right, but the best as you can. But hey, nothing beats still if you were hired on your own, just like what quackmoonstar did. It gives you a different kind of self-fulfillment in life.

Good luck to everyone! Pray hard. The good Lord has great plans for us always. =)

i can so relate to your post, around where im from nepotism is so rampant it has already become a norm. adding to this post, i would like to add "its not what you know or how hard you work, but how well you can suck up (sipsip)"

just my two cents
