it's not about WHAT you know, it's about WHO you know

the harsh reality:

it's not about WHAT you know, it's about WHO you know.

and i have witnessed this a lot of times already. i've seen it happen right in front of me.

Situation #1:

i went to Hospital A at quezon city to apply. the man at the HR told me that they have no opening and that they are not accepting applications. so i stepped aside and just copied the requirements. behind me were 2 girls. the girl approached the man and told him that they'd like to pass they're application. the man told them that they are not accepting applications. the girl handed him a letter then the man said, "oh, so you are the daughter of Mrs. ____" and he accepted the application of the girl and her friend!!! and i was just standing beside them! and then he asked them to proceed to the other room of the HR!!!

Situation #2:

i went to this big hospital in quezon city, Hospital B. as i approach the HR office, there's this huge sign saying that they are not accepting applications for staff nurse position. so again, i just copied the requirements. and beside me (why do i always happen to be near them?), is an applicant accompanied by a staff (which, i heard is her brother), and just went straight inside. i followed shortly and saw them being entertained by the HR, accepting the girl's application, but when it was my turn, i was told that i should've read the sign outside the door that they're not accepting applications. hello??? you're not accepting? what have i just seen?

Situation #3

i have this friend i came across while registering at Hospital B. when i asked him what he's doing there, he told me that he's gonna have his clinical exam for staff nurse at Hospital B. and i ask him when did he apply because i thought Hospital B is freeze hiring. he honestly told me that he's backed by a head nurse!!! great!!! he also told me that Hospital B needs 100+ nurses. but how come it's not posted? oh well, i guess that a lot of those 100+ are gonna be filled up by those applicants with backers.

and the list goes on...

i've read about these things happening, but i refused to believe them until these happened. it's just so bad that i've studied and practiced so hard to get good grades and get a good score on my NLE, and did well in the trainings that i went through. honestly speaking, i believe i have good credentials... but it doesn't matter now... my application would still be bumped off by those applicants with "padrinos" or backers...:o

don't get me wrong though. i'm not mad at those applicants with backers... i just find it unfair... to me and others out there who don't know anybody from any hospital. it's just really saddening...:o

Wow....i'm so surprised. Well, come to think of it....yes, it is the Philippines and most often...jobs are given to those who know a person in the inside. However, it doesn't take away the fact that...that sucks! Oh well....things happen for a reason. Keep at the job hunt and we'll pray for your success! Hope everything works out for the better...keep us updated!

Actually, I was not surprised with your stories. It is a fact and has been happening not only in applying for a job but also in other system. For me, nepotism, is sadly revolving in every transactions that we make. I believe that it doesn't happen only here in the Philippines but also in other countries. A sad reality...

When im still inthe PHilippines..i have a friend who is working with this institution and she told me there's an opening so even if she dont have a high position in the institution but she open the door for me so i can apply and eventually got in..even with my part-time job there i have a friend so she said come in and apply. But when I got here int he US...i dont know anyone working in a hospital or any relative whatsoever..I applied to big hospitals right away..ucla...cedar sinai...lac+usc and surprisingly I GOT INTO ONE without knowing anyone working in there. In time you will find an institution that will hire you not because of who you know but..who you are(just you)...good luck and God bless:-)

I actually have the same experience with one of the respective hospitals. It is very sad. It does not matter if what you are capable of but I am not loosing hope although I am unemployed for almost 1 1/2 year now. I think I have to train again at Philippine Red Cross for BLS.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Specializes in neonatal ICU.

sad to say we're in the philippines. however, i'm guilty of this. :p no, i didn't get my job because of a backer... i got my job on my own. way before i was a student, submitting applciations to the prc was a big hassle! My friends had been lining up for the PRc for a few days already, some even a few weeks... My mother howver had a close friend working there who works second in rank to the director... I got my application processed in a day. Of course, they still have to check whether my requirements are complete but thank god i finished my scrubs late since I knew all the corrections already for the application process and if there are any additional requirements after that. Sorry.
