8/22 What I learned this week....

Published

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

Specializes in LTC,Hospice/palliative care,acute care.

If you are a hospice or visiting nurse ALWAYS carry plenty of forms with you.....Do not, under ANY circumstances ,write recommendations on a piece of paper torn out of a spiral notebook!!!

I kinda like doing IMs. They're easy and brainless and yet still support the patient.

Plus, I can always tell them I have an appointment coming in. They let me out of anything for that, since they bill for me but I don't get paid.

I learned this week, as I worked both my jobs, that I miss hospital nursing, particularly employee health. I also miss my patients at the clinic. They were so salty.

Needles are just the tip of the iceberg.

Alright, I was out of town today and couldn't check AN for 8 HRS. Did I miss anything good?

I didn't see anything particularly interesting today.

NOW have you?

Actually, a lull is good. And The Blue Side soothes me. I like that you are there, purp!

Why did I tattoo my foot again. Oh the pain!!!!!!!

Why did I tattoo my foot again. Oh the pain!!!!!!!

My cousin got a massive sunflower on her foot and I was like OW!! it was her first tat.

Your post is useless without pics, BTW.

Lol. I'll post pictures when I get home & wash it off. Right now you can't see it because it's wrapped up & bloody. I know no one cares that it's bloody but I want to show it off in all its glory!

What did you get?

What did you get?

I got the cat touched up on my foot because the first artist didn't cover up the original tattoo. Right now it feels like a cat scraped the skin on my foot & ankle.

No interesting threads for me to look at today. I'm a little disappointed. But at least I have OC's tattoo to look forward to!

It took me forever to realize what The Blue Side even was! But I do like it. I've been half tempted to join the book club, but I know for a fact that I would let my Foundations book get too dusty if I picked up any sort of fiction.

Specializes in critical care.

I've learned a thread can go 292 deep with no smut.

I offer you classy smut. And I dedicate it to my Farawyn, the one classy AN dame who has experienced this loony toon after a margarita bigger than my head. :)

Far, I've seen you say you miss inpatient a few times today. Seems like change is in your future. What's stopping you?
