8/22 What I learned this week....

Published

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

Specializes in Telemetry.

4) There is a Baskin-Robbins store in Terre Haute, Indiana with a DRIVE-THROUGH!!!!

I attended college at a university not terribly far from Terre Haute and OMG we had a joint that served deep fried everything and ice cream (including *fried ice cream *) that -get this-DELIVERED!! That's right - ypu could have a cheeseburger and an ice cream sundae delivered to your door. (I almost always went with the fried ice cream) :)

It was epic. And a miracle I managed to stay thin throughout my time there.

It probably helped I schlepped around a huge (gorgeous)campus day in day out.

Awww memories..............

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add. I take more meds than my mom & husband. Yay for epilepsy, depression, anxiety & high cholesterol.

Upon first read, I thought you said you learned the 80s music rules, and thought what the heck are the rules? Hahhahaa. Thanks for that.

Hahhaha! Fixed.

I didn't learn anything nursing related this week, but I did learn that my blood pressure is out of control. Doubled meds at this point and being closely watched by my PCP. Very much not pretty numbers.

That sux. I'm not liking your post, just, ya know, liking you.

Specializes in Critical Care.

I learned that maybe there is a hospice nurse somewhere inside of me. Today, for the first time in almost a year, I was actually smiling as I drove drove home from work.

Specializes in Addictions Nursing, LTC.
- I am really rusty when it comes to school.

- I am also really anal when it comes to homework assignments.

- I am SO glad my husband is back from west Texas!

- I HATE ebooks!

- I am stressing about getting As in my two classes.

- I don't like that I'm not getting to exercise as much.

I did my first couple of assignments last night, and yeah, no As in my future. I freaking a little bit since my bridge program uses GPA and individual grades for entrance points. Ebooks are torture, I wish I could figure out how to print them on paper lol. I knew I'd be rusty 20 years out of high school, but this is really bad.

I am re-taking A&P 1 & micro because of that pesky 5 year rule. I haven't been in school for a while & now since I have a kid it's completely different this time around.

I purchased ebooks thinking "oh it's so much cheaper & I can read them on my cell, cool!". Not cool, they are a pain in the butt to use! I have since rented the physical texts.

I learned that I can stalk my friends on AN.

I learned that you can get glass stuck in your finger from a broken phone screen.

I learned that some people will nit-pic anything and everything, and that sometimes it's best to just roll with the punches.

I learned that my stethoscope will be coming in the mail on Monday, and that my fabulous friends are incredibly patient as they have volunteered to help me practice skills. (One even offered to let me practice listening to heart and lung sounds on her newborn...too bad I don't know how to do those things yet.)

Your first sentence: You're welcome!

Your second sentence: Good Lord, purp! Do you know how much surgery I had to do on the High school kids last year who did this very thing? Because why should BROKEN GLASS stop you from texting?!

I even has one girl stick her cracked phone in her Uggs, and of course she wasn't wearing socks because they are so damn fuzzy, so I had to dig broken glass out of her feet!

Give me your phone, purp. Hand it over.

I learnt that some doctors have absolutely no clue that ordering blood work is not within my scope of practice and therefore you should not scold me when I didn't do your job.
