What I Learned This Week: Retired Nurses-Where Two Or More Are Gathered...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Since ixchel is taking a much deserved break, she was gracious enough to allow me to fill in for her. Here's hoping I don't blow up her thread.

My next door neighbor is a retired nurse. She frequently comes over to visit me, which leads me to the title of the thread: where two or more retired nurses are gathered, the talk eventually turns to nursing.

Sharon (not her real name) has a son who works at a local hospital. He frequently fills his mother in with his experiences. She'll often share them with me, and many times the two of us end up shaking our heads in disbelief at how nursing has changed, sometimes for the good, often for the bad.

So what did I learn? I know that now, with greater certainty than before, that I dearly miss nursing, but not what it has become.

I've also learned that I must have some sort of invisible "Welcome, Free Lodging" sign over my head that only respiratory bugs can see. Every year like clockwork these invaders turn me into a coughing, sneezing, snotting host for them. It will get better, but by Oct/Nov. it will happen again.

And when a doctor gives you abx. for a sinus infection from Hades and tells you to make sure you take it with a probiotic, believe. him/her.

So, what have you learned this week? Hope you had a good one!

No. It's because it's mathematically impossible for her to be 29 if you are 54. She doesn't want to confound people. She's being quite generous.

That's EXACTLY what she says!!!

What is the process to appeal?

I've learned that an employer can seem like an angel to your face (this case my husband's face) & the devil behind his back.

Excuse me as I try not to explode.

So my husband was just denied unemployment. I am livid!!!!!! The company called & said they couldn't use him any more but yet the office said they fired him!!! Then the unemployment people ONLY spoke to my husband's former employer. They called him ONCE & after that my husband left tons & tons of messages. Not once did he get a call back or acknowledgement that his messages were received. How the hell is that fair?!

This month is gonna suck because my husband's former employer said they would work with him so we would get unemployment, but now we have $0 & no active income. I hope it doesn't come down to getting a title loan on my car. [emoji17]

1) I must be the Black Cloud this week. 3 patients bounced to ICU. ..

..you might have really been their angel. They could have coded and died and not made it to the unit to get intubated, really except for you they might not be alive.

1) I no longer trust any type of report from nurses from smaller hospital hospitals and/or the transporters. I've had patients show up in absolutely ridiculous conditions that I'm surprised didn't die in the ambulance. Two of those aforementioned patients ended up going straight to our Level 1 CTICU.

I have received Pts from hospitals that are alert and oriented when they left via EMS and then by the time I am getting them into bed they have had an obvious stroke and the EMTs report how the blood pressure was fine but kept going higher. That was another admt her directly into ICU and not the floor. She had a massive brain bleed going on and she survived but sadly sometimes survival isn't the kindest thing.

Don't you just want to spaz when you get a hand-off report from another nurse or department within your own hospital and they forget to tell you the fact they have head lice and no they hadn't the time to do the medicated shampoo. They are way to busy with unstable Pts.

Way too busy?! Well excuse me, I will tell my other 6 Pts to check their own vital signs and keep a note for me to pick up later and to pull their bedside commodes over to use by themself when they need it because I have to finish ICU's medicated shampoo...that was ordered to be done last night on the 3-11 shift.

and darn....now I'm starting to itch.....

Never grow up Far!

Is it me or do we, as humans, do life backwards? :whistling:

[h=1]In my next life I want to live my life backwards. You start out dead and get that out of the way. Then you wake up in an old people's home feeling better every day. You get kicked out for being too healthy, go collect your pension, and then when you start work, you get a gold watch and a party on your first day. You work for 40 years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You party, drink alcohol, and are generally promiscuous, then you are ready for high school. You then go to primary school, you become a kid, you play. You have no responsibilities, you become a baby until you are born. And then you spend your last 9 months floating in luxurious spa-like conditions with central heating and room service on tap, larger quarters every day and then Voila! You finish off as an orgasm!”[/h]-Woody Allen

It didn't take much. Just had to go online & fill out some information. He got the phone call to firm up the details later that day.

I've been meaning to read it. It's at the top of my list, along with The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. I'll try to look for the video!

By Oliver Sacks! Awesome read, by the inspiration for "Awakenings", one of my favorite Robin Williams films.

I've learned all I wanted to know about linoleum, and then some!

Linoleum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

All I think is,why? Maybe if you are remodeling and putting in new flooring yourself, otherwise I can't imagine a more boring topic to brush up on.

I learned that Harvard Square's Au Bon Pain closed this week, where they filmed a scene from the movie. I lived 5 minutes down the road when the movie came out, felt hip. Memories.
