Some hospitals will accept new grads into an L&D department, others require that you have other experience.
I am still in Nursing School, but my guess is that if your hospital of choice doesn't allow new grads into specialty departments right away, then a year or two of Med Surg will allow you to transfer into the specialty with no problem.

In my area, RN's regardless of educational background (diploma, ASN, BSN), can get hired into labor and delivery right out of school, IF you can find an opening.

That's good to know because I would really love to be a L&D nurse one day.

L&D is generally a very popular unit for new grads, so expect some competition if your hospital accepts new grads. I've heard of panel interviews where you have to interview with the manager and several of the nurses that work on the floor. Good luck!
