What hours do you work? 12 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts? Do you work full-time or part time or PRN? What area of nursing do you work in? If you have children how do you factor that into your schedule as far as child-care?
Just curious. :wink2: I'm still a nursing student but my husband and I are talking about the future and how exactly we'll handle child-care, my hours etc.

I work full time, 12s x3 per week. I work on a telemetry floor on nights, 5pm-530am. Right now SO isn't working, so he keeps the kids while I work. When he gets a job we will get a sitter for the couple of afternoons a week I have to leave for work before he gets home.
On my floor a new grad has to be full time for a year before there is an option to go to part time, weekends only, or PRN.

I work 3 12 hour shifts as well. I work nights 7p-7a. No kids at this time, but we are working on that . When we do have children, my parents and grandma live less than a mile from us. His parents live on my way to work. They have all offered to babysit while I sleep or we both are working or I am sleeping since I work nights.

I am a CNA in a LTC. I work 8 hours shifts. 10pm-6am
but I am soon moving into the hospital, where I'll be working as a CNA on the mother/baby unit, and the NICU unit. my understanding is that those shifts are 8 hours as well. 11pm-7:30am
I don't have any children, but if you do, which I'm assuming that you do, I would opt. for a NOC shift. that way you can be with your kids all day, and leave for work when there asleep.

[rant]Ya know, it kills me when people say this. And just WHEN am I supposed to sleep?!!?!?!?!? You cannot work all night, stay up all day with the kids and then work the next night, unless you are a robot. Humans need sleep. Night shift killed me physically--I was sick all the time, grumpy from not sleeping, and just generally miserable. I actually see my kids more now that I work day shift, because I'm not trying to get every last scrap of sleep in every minute of the day because I'm not sleep deprived. Sure, there is that rare person who can function on 2-3 hrs of sleep a night, but I am NOT one of them.[/rant]

I should add, my kids are all school aged, so when he is working during the day, I am sleeping while the kids are at school.

I work per diem on 12 hour Saturday days.
The children stay with their Dad. Saturday is "Dad day" around our house.
I had 4 years of full time work in ICU before I went per diem.
I will occasionally use Grandma on weekday occasions for certifications, mandatory inservices and other things not offered on weekends.

i worked 11p to 7a and hated it..i don't have small children at home anymore, kids are grown with families of their own. i was always tired, grumpy from missing out on the things that went on with my grandkids, hated going to bed when everyone else was busy with normal things. hated going to work when everyone else was sleeping. i just hated it period. and stayed sick most of the time. now i work home health, mon-fri, 8a-4:30 and take call once a month for a week, a much better life for these bones. i just don't see how a mother with small children does it..but they have my utmost respect.

As a new grad I worked 12 hr nights (7-7). My oldest son was in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. Then I switched to 12 hr days (7-7) after Gracie was born. Three years ago I got away from full time direct patient care and my job offers either 4-10s or 5-8s. I work 10s and I love having a weekday off. It allows me to still be involved in PTA and MOPs and run errands on weekdays. I still work ICU prn on some of my days off, and I usually schedule 12s, but I have the option of 8s if I like. I can schedule 11a-11p, 7a-7p, 7a-3p or 11a-7p.
