  1. One night I was caring for this resident who is known for his cursing and his anger. I was taking him to the bathroom, and he said that he had to have a bowel movement, so I told him to pull the cord when he was done, and I'd come back and get him back to bed. So after about 10-15 min. he pulled the cord, I came down to his room, opened the door....and I was like...OH MY GOSH! I ran out to the nurses station and grabbed my best friend and told him to come help me with this....we ran down to his room and we opened the door, my co-worker looks in the bathroom, shuts the door, looks at his watch, and says, "dang ya know what Jarelle, I gotta go on my lunch peace out!" Come along with me for this crazy BM journey. When I opened the door this is the scene. Diarrhea everywhere. On the floor, on the walls, on the resident, on his face, his hands, the trash can, the sink, the door, the mirror, EVERYWHERE. And smack dab in the middle is a huge, and I'm talk the size of a softball and a half, piece of poop. The resident looks at me, smiles, stands up and says "guess you have quite a mess to clean up now don't you?" I look at him and I say "Why? why me" he looks at me and says "Comes with the trade." *sigh* took me over 2 hours to clean up the mess and him.
  2. we have this one lady at my long term care facility that has severe dementia. And she is known for making up crazy words and going on and on about her made up words and stories. Well she's also know for saying crazy great things about you. So one night she's talking to me about infractureacation (one of her made up words), which in her mind means that the dogs are going to eat that tool in that shed. lol idk. and so she looks at me and starts touching my skin and she looks at me and with the most serious face she says, "now you listen here. You don't listen to what anyone has to say about that care plan (?) because all you need to know is that you have the most amazing wonderfullest flesh i've ever seen." So I'm laughing and I'm like well thank you, you know your skin is very soft as well. So she looks at me and says "you know you are so pretty." and so I said aw well thanks your pretty too, but sshhh don't tell anyone that I said that. And so she looks at me with this look of surprise and then she screams out, "well i want to let everyone know that the gold fish are here, and that you are really ******* pretty!" Mind you that this was 1 in the morning, and she refused to go to bed....and she woke up like 6 residents. I sat there laughing, and so did the other CNA's. We all still quote that to this day. :rotfl:
  3. I'm a CNA and I know how you feel. I've had a passion for people since I was a baby. I'm only 18 years old, and I'm a CNA at a long term facility. And it's awesome. I love to hear the stories (truth or lies) of what they did when there were growing up and things like that. I have orientated many new CNA students, and I can tell you this much....there is a lot of BM in this practice. But you will get used to the smell, I promise. When I first started I gagged a few times, and then after about a month or so, I dealt with it....the only times that I gag now are to the smell of a bladder infection, like a hardcore bladder infection, or I sometimes gag when I'm changing a resident and they toot. lol But there is hope. I've taught many people how to avoid gagging. Takes some practice but you'll overcome it. The trick is to breathe through the mouth, and out through the nose. Long deep breaths. And you'll be just fine. Don't worry about it. Because when you become a nurse, you'll be dealing with worse things then a poopy diaper. Just breathe, that's the best techniques and if you feel the need to gag, don't gag in front of the resident, most feel embarrassed that someone has to change them, so if you do gag :barf01:, look away from the patient/resident. I hope that that helps you out. And good luck. and remember to just breathe :)
  4. I am a CNA in a LTC. I work 8 hours shifts. 10pm-6am but I am soon moving into the hospital, where I'll be working as a CNA on the mother/baby unit, and the NICU unit. my understanding is that those shifts are 8 hours as well. 11pm-7:30am I don't have any children, but if you do, which I'm assuming that you do, I would opt. for a NOC shift. that way you can be with your kids all day, and leave for work when there asleep.
  5. Eugene is always wanting more nurses. Sacred Heart is an excellent place to work. We also have another hospital called Riverbend that is under the name of Peace Health.
  6. LCC is a great school for all of your prenursing needs. However it's extremely hard to get into there program. We have two hospitals here. Sacred Heart Medical Center which is located downtown Eugene, and the new hospital Riverbend which is located in Springfield. If your coming here to be a CNA/CMA you will have no problem finding jobs. anything in the nursing field is widely accepted anywhere that you go, and theres always a shortage of CNA's and nurses. Good luck, and welcome to Oregon.
  7. I live in eugene, and it's a wonderful place to live. I'd choose here.
  8. I live in Oregon, and I'm currently making $9.75 working at a LTC. however, I will be working at the hospital, where a CNA can make $11.56-$16.72
  9. and honestly I'd rather have a female do all femaleish care on me. rather then have a guy do it.
  10. I'm a CNA so I kinda don't have a real imput on this one, but I'll give you one anyways, lol. Sometimes the patients/residents feel that it's inappropriate for a male to do any care on them. Could just be that the female patient/resident is an old fashion type of girl.
  11. sheesh somebody should light that **** on fire. lol.
  12. heck yeah they should exist. that would put so much more work on the already busy nurses.
  13. if your a dude and you have chest hair...don't wear the v neck scrub tops. it's so nasty. wear a shirt with that, ya nasty. :dncgbby:
  14. Can I just be honest here? I work in a long term nursing home, and the care that these residents get is just above what is considered good. And that's how it is at all nursing homes. I really try to provide the best care possible. If I notice a resident needs changed, shaved, toileted, or anything I'll do it. But so often I see CNA's who say I'll do it when I get back from my lunch break. and then they don't. I've told my parents, that I would never put them in that type of a home, because they don't get the care that they deserve, and that's not fair to anybody.
