Do they require you to get there before 7:00 to prepare or can you do this at home? I have heard that some students must report at 5:30 or 6:00 to prepare to take care of their patient. Is that just a recommendation? I have children and I'm a single parent and I don't know if I can get there that early without a daycare that is open around those times. I wantd to know if I should use a private daycare so maybe the hours are more flexible and would allow me to drop off my children earlier.
My school gives us the choice of clinical times - I have chosen the typical day shift clinical, which goes from 7:00 to 3:00. I'll have to go the hospital the day (or night) before clinical to get the paperwork and get the care plan going, and then when we report in the a.m. we begin with a preconference and check for any patient changes overnight. They also offer evening shift and even Saturday clinicals as options.

We go the day before to pick up pt. info, then write the care-plans at home the night before clinical. We have to have gotten report and be ON the floor by 7am, so it usually means getting there around 6:40 or so, depending on how report is given (by tape or in-person. We've done both).
Also, it may sound strange, but don't forget traffic/parking issues. At one hospital we were at, the students were made to park in the furthest, most out-of-the-way lot they could possibly find. It made it a GOOD 10 minute walk from the parking lot and into the building and up to our floor - no kidding! And traffic in this area was horrible with all the shift changes around that time. Best advice there is to do a trial run and see how it might be around that time, especially if you're like me and have to travel a good distance.
Our clinicals SAY they run from 7-2pm, but I find each instructor is different. We had pre- and post-conference in my first rotation, and she always let us go early. Others did not, and kept us late sometimes, even for those students who had to get back to campus for a class (and they'd end up going in their scrubs - YUCK!).
For the first half of this semester, my class was divided into days and evenings. Half of us (myself included) went 7:30 am - 1:30 pm and the other half went 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm. This was for two days per week.
Now that we're starting psych clinicals, my group is doing 7:00 am - 7:00 pm on Mondays only. Seems like an awfully long clinical day to me, but oh well...guess it will get us ready for typical nursing shifts once we're out of school.

Do most clinicals take place at 7:00 am, or do some take place at night?
