Just curious what different hospitals do for this week, if anything.
At ours, we usually get one free meal and a token little gift like a calculator or a pen.
Well, I want more than that! Any ideas on how our workplaces can cater to us?:balloons:
Ours is having a "nurses tea" at 12-2pm. Which sucks if you're doing 7pm-7am. Like Tweety said, I don't worry too much about getting little trinkets. I work at a place that is pretty well staffed, have 20 paid vacation days, reasonable paycheck and compared to some places I've worked, I'm thankful for that.
However, for the facility that gave the packs of diabetic wafers away, they may as well not have bothered, for it sounded so cheap and insulting.
I work in public health as a case manager. My department has some nurses who work in STD, and I was surprised when my supervisor asked me to bring something to the "surprise" luncheon for nurse's week. She informed me I don't work as a nurse. Little does she know. Seriously. This is one battle I am not going to fight. Kind of funny since I could not have applied for my job without my BSN......:monkeydance: :monkeydance: :monkeydance:
I get a paycheck, benefits, and 30 paid days off a year, amongst other things and for that I'm greatful. So I don't go around acting like an ingrate when they give me my annual token gift for nurses week. I think if nurses are so ingrateful to their hospitals then they should celebrate themselves within their own units or start something themselves rather than whine and complain and cry "gimme gimme gimme I am a nurse for heaven's sake, you should be greatful I show up every day."We have a week-long celebration where I work, with little things along the way. On nurses day they have an awards banquet where they give out scholarships, excellence awards, and "nurse of the year". I think we're getting a beach towel.
I don't expect much and am quite happy with the acknowledgement they give us for Nurse's Week. I admit I would be preturbed if they did absolutely nothing.
I'm flame proof by the way. LOL
Well, I guess you could call me an ingrate. I was also curious what other hospitals do, if anything. I have felt un-appreciated for a long time due to other reasons...so nurse's week is just part of my long list of gripes...needless to say I am trying out a new hospital soon.:monkeydance:

Oh, yeah and I am not one to go around and gripe about it, I just laugh inside at what a joke it all is.
Started my new SICU job at a new hospital last week. Joint commision is also on the floor this week, they were supposed to pass around an ice cream cart, dunno what happened, but I'm not complaining, love the new job. Got a very nice lunchbox today on my first day on the floor. As I was leaving, the manager said, be here early for breakfast so I assume breakfast will be served as well. The best part of nurses week is that I needed new scrubs since I can now WEAR WHATEVER COLOR I WANT, may burn the whites that were mandatory at the old job, you could get sent home without pay if you wore a diff color. Anyways live in nashville, the scrub shop in goodlettsville is giving AWESOME discounts on scrubs. The cute printed tops that are normally 20 bucks are 10 now, matching pants are cheap too. I'm sure many stores are doing the same.
When I worked in the hospital, I got to the point that I didn't expect much from anyone. The first several years I was there, they gave out all of the things they had collected from drug reps, supply reps, flight teams, etc. If a flight team gave you one of their pins or caps or something, you had to turn it in to management so they could pass it out during nurses week. They gave out all sorts of junk like last year's calendar, empty popcorn and cookie tins, and expired long distance calling cards. It got a little better with new management. We got things like mugs with the hospital logo, massages, and lunches. The biggest problem with the meals and massages was that they were only done during the day, so if you were pulling a long stretch on the night shift, you pretty much got left out. They also gave out things like sample sized lotions from Bath & Body, which I know the male staff appreciated very much...LOL.
Honestly, I would rather do without the trinkets. I would like more respect, meetings at times that don't force me to get up in the middle of my sleep, adequate supplies and staff, and support from management when things go belly up or when patients and their families complain without true justification.
Forgot to add...one year a patient gave me bacterial meningitis and mono...after he puked and coughed and blew snot all over me, I knew it was his fault when I was sicker than I had ever been in my life ten days later. He spent three weeks in the hospital with meningitis and mono, so I am pretty comfortable laying the blame on him. :)
Sunny Florida! We have a committee that works really hard all year for Nurses week. I forgot to mention that they also mailed us the names of quite a few (12-14) merchants who are offering discounts to us if we show our ID badges. It's nice to know that they care!
i live in florida...what hospital?

Where I work, they actually do much more than all that. We get a breakfast served to us by the administrators, we get a special gift ( usually a bag ) , we get a raffle drawing for a day at a spa (main thing) and other smaller raffle items. We get an icecream social, and pizzas delivered to the night shift (delivered to the floors by the administrators). Not bad, but we always want more, because we deserve more!! oh the massages are also available during the day hours if you can get to them!
