What the heck is a Netie pot?

I was watching Discovery Health the other night and caught something about a "netie pot."

Anyone have any experience with these? Do they work? How do they work? Won't they make a sinus problem worse?

I've recommended them and known people who swore by them.

I just can't bring myself to do it though. I hate really really bad to get water up my nose. Just the thoughts of doing this makes me gag.

I've been using a sinus rinse by NeilMed (suggested by my cough specialist), works like a netie pot but this is an irragation bottle with a screw on lid that has a hole in the middle of the lid. Place the top of the bottle into the nare and tilt your head slightly to the left if using the right nare etc, and squirt. Yes it does come out the other nare and sometimes the mouth.

I've used this tx for years by using tepid water and adding the NeilMed packets (walmart, target, walgreen's) I purchase wihch is a saline granular mix that I add to the bottle than the tepid water. I never put the bottle in the microwave to heat for 30 sec. I use a 1 cup measuring cup and heat that up.

I have used this along side with a 28 day RX for serious sinus infection w/o harm. Otherwise I use qd-tid depending on the seasons.

BIG fan of the Neti pot! I have used mine for years and use it during very high pollen seasons regularly and in the winter at the first tingle of a sinus/upper respiratory thing. It almost always keeps the infection from progressing and always makes me breathe easier and I think reduces inflammation.

One thing I ALWAYS make sure I tell people when recomendding it is to be certain to buy good quality, organic, iodine free salt to use with it. Go to Whole Foods or a natural food store and buy the best, most pure salt you can find. I would not want to be swishing bad quality salt or salt that has extra stuff in it through my nostrils.

I can't wait to try this; I have had chronic sinus trouble for years.

I use the NeilMed thing, too. It does help--I like the packets. 61R9518ESRL._AA280_.jpg

Amazon has it.

Love the Neti pot. I used it for a sinus infection after seeing it on the Oprah show and honestly was amazed that I didn't have to go to the MD to get on antibiotics (which I have had to do for the last couple of years).

Just remember to keep your mouth open when your pouring it in, otherwise you'll feel like your drinking from the ocean! :lol2:

Does anyone watch the office?

Dwight wanted the teapot from the office party to use to irrigate his sinuses. He should have looked on amazon. I had no idea this was for real!

WhenI first started this sinus rinse I would only use distilled H20, but now I use tap warer and find no difference.

I love the Neti Pot and have used one for yrs., it's so soothing

and helps keep me healthy; it's part of my daily routine.

I use Neti Pot salt, (non-iodized & preservative free)

that can be purchased at most health food stores or GNC.

Be sure to keep your Neti Pot super clean after each use

and buy separate ones for each member the family!

Walgreens sell plastic Neti Pots (salt included) for $14.95.

Try it....you'll like it!

Well, forget research. It's got the Oprah™ seal of approval :)

Oh boy and ain't that the truth! Most people had never heard of the thing ~2 months ago...and then it was on Oprah...

Now the pharmacy I work at gets 15+ calls a DAY asking about the darn thing!

Same thing with Airborne....remember the great Airborne rush of 2003(4?)...when the schoolteacher who developed the formula was on Oprah? The product had been around since the mid 90's...and NObody had heard of it or used it....and then Oprah waved her wand and suddenly the whole world wanted it and swore by it. It was back-ordered for months! People went nuts over the stuff!

God bless Oprah. She could probably single handedly keep our economy going just by recommending certain products each week!

I can't tolerate decogestants- I think I'll have to give one of these a try after reading all the positive feedback here. Thanks!
