What happens to your license if the school you previously attended shuts down?

I made the ignorant decision to go to a for profit school to obtain my Lpn license in light of the recent ITT tech closing this has me thinking..what happens to my license if the school I graduated from closes it's doors? Does that mean I have to forfeit my license? Or will I be able to maintain my license and still practice? I have searched through this site and not found any definite answers. Someone please help 😀

Jocelyn Are you already licensed?

What question did you ask your teacher?

Why would you post to a forum when the only way to get a truly accurate answer is to contact your BON? It doesn't matter what answers turn up here, your BON is the only one whose answers count.

I agree that contacting your BON is the answer, but keep in mind that all sorts of schools shut down - it isn't a problem limited to for-profits. The state university I'd thought about going to shut down their nursing program (good thing I didn't go there, as it shut down when I would have been in the middle of the program!).

They can't possibly go yanking everyone's license when the school closes, or there would be a lot less experienced nurses!

No, it does not mean any such thing. Once you are licensed by your state that is that. Long as you met the qualifications for taking the boards exam and otherwise qualified your former program has nothing more to do with your license.

In almost every state there is a procedure in place for forwarding educational records when any school closes. Primary, secondary and higher education records are a type of legal documents and thus cannot be destroyed unless or until the state or court gives permission. Yes, somewhere out there your high school record is still gathering dust! *LOL*

Usually when a school closes the state BON will have a listing where educational records were transferred/are being kept. This allows former students who require copies of their transcripts such as for attending another school, applying for a license in another country or whatever to know where to look.

Here in NYS it goes like this: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/nurse/closed-nursing-programs.htm

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PACU.

If what your instructor said was true, there would be a lot of diploma nurses out of a job! Don't worry about it.

Specializes in MED-SURG, REHAB, VENT, VIRTUAL CARE.

Nothing happens to your License. My LPN school closed, I graduated over 17 yrs ago.

Specializes in GENERAL.
Okay thank you. I had even asked one of my previous teachers and she said yes the bon could take your license away, I thought that sounded strange.

OP:

Your previous teacher is a present nut.

If you obtained a valid license from a valid (and I use the term loosely) school, it can not retroactively be invalidated by the state without due process.

But you can thank all the great accrediting bodies, CCNE included, and our terrific Nursing leadership (ANA) and worthless, compromised state BONs for throwing you and tens of thousands of other dupes to the for-profit wolves.

Where do I get one of those rubberstamp jobs? I feel the calling!!!
